Ganderbal : The Department of Communication and Journalism (DCJ), Central University of Kashmir (CUK) marked National Radio Day on Tuesday with a special event, drawing insights from professionals in the field of radio broadcasting.
In his welcome address, Prof. ShahidRasool, Dean, School of Media Studies and DAA, paid glowing tributes to the pioneers of radio broadcasting. He underscored the lasting influence and significance of radio as a vital medium of mass communication in India, emphasizing that National Radio Day serves as a reminder of the rich legacy of radio and its profound societal impact. He informed the participants that due to the concerted efforts of the department, under the leadership and guidance of Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A RavinderNath, DCJ has been granted the license to run a community radio station in the campus. “The community radio station will provide ample opportunities to CUKashmir students to experiment and experience broadcasting for the development.”
The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Syed HumayunQaisar, former Director, All India Radio, Srinagar. Mr. Qaisar emphasized the current relevance of radio, acknowledging its evolution while stressing its enduring power. He highlighted how the advent of smartphones has made radio more accessible, fitting right into the pockets of millions. Mr. Qaisar also reflected on the changing media landscape, noting that while traditional broadcasting might seem less dominant today, its content continues to educate and inform the public effectively.
Adding to the discourse, RJ Vishesh from Punjabi Fever 107.2 FM, Delhi, spoke passionately about the crucial role of music in radio broadcasting. He emphasized that “the one who manages the music at a radio station essentially owns the entire station,” pointing out the significant influence music holds in shaping the listener’s experience.
Dr. Asif Khan, SrAsst Prof. discussed the impact of electronic media on daily life, particularly in political campaigns. Dr. John K. Babu, SrAsst Prof. shed light on the collaborative scientific advancements in radio broadcasting and its critical role during natural disasters, such as the floods in Kashmir in the year 2014.The celebration offered an excellent platform for students and scholars from the DCJ, IT, and Education to engage with industry veterans and gain valuable insights into the ever-evolving world of radio. The event was conducted by Dr. John K. Babu, with Dr. Asif Khan extending a vote of thanks. Dr. Akhter Bhat served as the rapporteur, and Sameer Wani provided technical support.
