Baramulla: Government Degree College (GDC) Baramulla, serving as the lead college, hosted a series of vibrant inter-college competitions to celebrate Independence Day, 2024.
The program was conducted under the overall guidance of Principal Prof. Mohammad Shafi Lone.
In National Anthem Singing Competition: An inter-college National Anthem Singing Competition was held in the college auditorium, showcasing participants’ patriotism through music.
RaziaFarooq of GDC Baramulla won first place, with FidaHussain of GDC Uri and AinulBrijes of GDC Tangmarg securing second and third positions, respectively. Winners received cash prizes of Rs 1500, 1000, and 700.
The event also featured performances by Prof. Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo and Dr. Syed MutaharAaqib, concluding with reflections on the nation’s history and diversity.
Painting Competition: Held in the Conference Hall of the college, the Painting Competition saw Haya Azad from GDC Women Sopore winning first place. Syed UsmanGeelani from GDC URI and SadiyaFayaz from GDC Sopore achieved second and third places, respectively.
Quiz Competition: An Inter-College Quiz Competition was organized for colleges in the North Zone of Baramulla to foster a spirit of knowledge-sharing and patriotism among students. The quiz covered the theme ‘Freedom Struggle and National Heroes’. The competition featured four rounds, with two teams reaching the final. GDC Women Baramulla’sNazish Ali and SaniaFareed secured first place, followed by OwaisAsad Mir and RomisaIqbal of GDC Boniyar in second place, and MehwishNazir and NuzhatAfroz of GDC Women Sopore in third place.
The event was a grand success, celebrating academic excellence and competitive spirit, and the winners were awarded trophies and certificates.
Essay Writing Competition: The inter-college Essay Writing Competition, themed Unsung Heroes of Freedom Struggle, featured eleven students. Winners included AfsahTaufeeq from GDC Tangmarg securing first place, followed by FazilaGhulam from GDC Uri and AsmatAhad from GDC ThindamKreeri in second and third places, respectively.
The competition aimed to highlight lesser-known figures in India’s independence movement, fostering a deeper understanding of their contributions.
Pledge Against Drug Abuse: In addition to the competitions, staff and students of GDC Baramulla participated in an online pledge against drug abuse under the “NashaMukt Bharat Abhiyan” initiative. Prof. Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo, Nodal Officer NMBA, delivered a talk on the theme, emphasizing the importance of a drug-free society.
The event concluded with a Felicitation Ceremony in the College Auditorium. Winners were awarded certificates and cash prizes.
GDC Baramulla’s Independence Day celebrations not only showcased the talents of students from across North Kashmir but also highlighted the institution’s collaborative spirit and community engagement.
