Bandipora: In a spirited celebration of Swachhta Pakhwada, a mega event was on Tuesday organized at Wullar Vantage Park Bandipora, highlighting the importance of cleanliness, environmental conservation and to celebrate the spirit of patriotism.
The programme was organised by Wular Conservation and Management Authority in collaboration with Forest Division Bandipora as part of the ongoing Swachhta Pakhwada, observed from August 1st to 15th, 2024, across the district.
The event featured a series of activities, including a plantation drive, a vibrant Tiranga Boat Rally and cleanliness drive.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Bandipora, Shakeel ul Rehman inaugurated the event by flagging-off the Tiranga Boat Rally, which aimed to promote patriotism and the preservation of natural resources and symbolises the unity and dedication of the local community towards preserving the environment.
The rally, which showcased a fleet of decorated boats waving national flags, was a visual representation of the collective commitment to maintaining the ecological integrity of Wular Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia.
Speaking on the occasion, DC emphasized the importance of community involvement in environmental conservation. Wular Lake is not only a natural treasure but also a lifeline for the people of Bandipora, he added.
To further enhance the significance of the occasion, Cultural programmes were organized, featuring performances by students from various schools across the district. The students showcased cultural items that celebrated the patriotic spirit of the nation while also highlighting the importance of environmental cleanliness and conservation.
The cultural performances captivated the audience while delivering a powerful message on the importance of saving the earth, water, and trees. Through music, dance, and drama, performers highlighted the need for collective action to address environmental challenges and preserve natural resources for future generations.
On the occasion, a cleanliness drive was conducted along the banks of the lake, engaging volunteers and community members in efforts to maintain the beauty and ecological balance of the area; a plantation drive was also held in the premises of Wullar Vantage park.
The drive also included other activities such as lake cleaning, awareness campaigns, and community participation programs, all geared towards ensuring the long-term sustainability of Wular Lake.
Among others, the event was attended by DDC Hajin, Dr. Ghulam Mustafa; Coordinator WUCMA, Altaf Hussain; Project Coordinator WUCMA, DFO, Additional Superintendent of Police, ACD and other senior officers of the district.
The event also marked overwhelming participation from students, tribal representatives, NGOs, local fishermen community, officers and officials of Forest Protection force, Rural development department, and Wullar Manasbal Development Authority.
