New Delhi: The Opposition on Thursday opposed the Waqf (Amendment) bill, 2024, tabled by the Government in the Lok Sabha and described it as ‘anti-Muslim’, an ‘attack on the Constitution’ and demanded to be withdrawn.

Congress member K C Venugopal while opposing the bill said that this bill brought by the government was a fundamental attack on the Constitution and a draconian law.

Venugopal said that through this Bill, the government was attacking the faith and religion of the people, adding that the people of this country would not accept this “divisive politics”.

Nationalist Congress Party-SP leader Supriya Sule said that the Bill was brought without any parliamentary consultation. She even said that the she came to know about the Bill through media. She also requested the Bill to be sent to the standing committee for better consultation.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav while opposing the Bill said that the tabling of this Bill was being done under a very well thought out politics.

He said that the truth is that BJP was trying to bring this bill to appease a few of its frustrated and staunch supporters.

“Today our rights are being curtailed. Remember I told you (Speaker) that you are the judge of democracy. I have heard that some of your rights are also being taken away in this lobby. For that people will have to fight for you also.

Objecting to this statement by Akhilesh Yadav, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that “Akhilesh ji, you cannot talk in this manner. You are not the protector of the Speaker’s rights.”

AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi while strongly opposing the Bill said that the bill was discriminatory, arbitrary and anti-Muslim. He also called the BJP as enemy of the Muslims and was bringing the Bill only to divide the nation.
