New Delhi : J&K National Conference Member Parliament from Srinagar Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Saturday called on Union Home Minister Amit to seek release of hundreds of prisoners from J&K who have been held without trials for an extended period of time.
According to a statement issued from party headquarters here, additionally, the MP sought the transfer of individuals currently under trial and have not yet been convicted to jails within Jammu and Kashmir.
In a letter addressed to Home Minister Ruhullah further emphasized the urgency of addressing the prolonged detention of these individuals and stressed the importance of upholding their rights to a fair and timely trial.
In his letter to Home minister, Ruhullah said that several people from J&K have been incarcerated from different regions of the valley and many of them are convicted, undertrial or are being held without a trail and are being held in different parts of the country.”
In his letter to Home Minister Ruhullah further said “Most of these prisoners held without a trial happen to be young individuals, it is unfair on part of the government to hold these people at an age that is decisive for career and nation building.I believe their release to be imperative, and call upon the government to release the prisoners without a trial at the earliest”.
Calling for a compassionate view for the prisoners serving confinement in different jails across the country, Ruhullah stressed that weather conditions of the Kashmir province of Jammu and Kashmir are different from the rest of the nation and “those prisoners who are convicted or are undertrial should be shifted to the valley on humanitarian aspects. It is also difficult for the relatives of these prisoners to meet them in the different parts of the country both physically and financially.”
