“A failure in the functioning of waste disposal system brings under stress the movement of the tourists and as well as their physical environments at the tourist places across Kashmir.”
Most of the popular tourist spots drawing huge crowds across Kashmir amid intense heat wave are witnessing a huge surge in liter equally due to lack of civic senses shown by the visitors and the carelessness shown by the authorities in arranging facilities for waste dumping .While visitors can take trash bags with them and dump them at the dumping facility sites, the authorities can arrange waste collection bins in and around parks and gardens at tourist places across Kashmir. While it is true that waste collection bins already placed in and around parks and gardens reach their capacity in short times, the onus clearing waste bins frequently thrice or even five times a day lies on waste collection teams of the municipal bodies at all the tourist places. Huge influx of tourists consequently brings under stress the facilities that are created for the conveniences of the tourists and it is for the authorities to upgrade and expand the facilities for the convenience of the tourists at the crowded tourist destinations across Kashmir. Uncollected and untreated waste hugely impacts both the public health and as well as the environment. A failure in the functioning of waste disposal system brings under stress the movement of the tourists and as well as their physical environments at the tourist places across Kashmir. Since the strength of sustainable tourism lies in the development of infrastructural structural facilities, increasing the strength of facilities like waste disposal facilities in terms of both the capacities and as well as their overall functioning deserves and demand highest priority. Experiences have also shown that maintaining, developing and upgrading facilities for tourists are more important than their installation for sustainable tourism. So installation of more and more trash bins in presence of rising tourist footfall deserves immediate attention of the municipal bodies at all the tourist places across Kashmir.
“Care has to be taken that waste is not land filled or dumped stealthily at public spaces as any such bad practice brings public places under environmental and public health burdens equally at tourist destination and populated areas in cities and towns. Collecting waste in trash bins is just the initial phase of waste disposal management system and next to it come the stages of sorting, storage, and disposal for which the facilities need to be upgraded at all tourist places in view of the unprecedented rise in the tourist footfall across Kashmir.”
Though municipal bodies tasked the job of waste disposal management are to be held responsible for all the failures but private bodies — notably NGOs would be doing a great public service if they supplement the efforts of municipal bodies by using their resources and manpower in the implementation of the practices of waste management and disposal . Such actions by private bodies particularly NGOs hugely further the causes of public health and the environment. In the end care has to be taken that waste is not land filled or dumped stealthily at public spaces as any such bad practice brings public places under environmental and public health burdens equally at tourist destination and populated areas in cities and towns. Collecting waste in trash bins is just the initial phase of waste disposal management system and next to it come the stages of sorting, storage, and disposal for which the facilities need to be upgraded at all tourist places in view of the unprecedented rise in the tourist footfall across Kashmir.
