“The conduct of assembly elections for installation of the first popular Government post August 2019 decisions on Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation and Abrogation Of Article 370 will undoubtedly be the beginning of a new phase of electoral democracy in Jammu & Kashmir.”

The direction of  J&K Chief Electoral Officer P K Pole for revision of electoral rolls to Deputy Commissioners of all the 20 districts in Jammu & Kashmir followed by his meeting with the representatives of all the recognised political parties in Jammu has virtually set the stage for much awaited assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir. Notably the launch of the electoral initiatives for assembly elections by J&K Chief Electoral Officer has started barely days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his maiden visit to Srinagar post 2024 Lok Sabha elections early this month promised the conduct of much awaited assembly elections for formation of a popular government and restoration of statehood to Jammu & Kashmir in short near future. The conduct of assembly elections for installation of the first popular Government post August 2019 decisions on Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation and Abrogation Of Article 370 will undoubtedly be the beginning of a new phase of electoral democracy in Jammu & Kashmir. Unlike Pre August 2019 constitutional scenario the Central Government won’t have to seek the nod of Jammu & Kashmir Assembly for extension of any central law to Jammu & Kashmir hereafter but instead Jammu & Kashmir Assembly will now have a constitutional binding to enforce in Jammu & Kashmir all the laws passed by the parliament and seek the approval of the Central Government for either amending any existing law or taking a call on any new law in the assembly hereafter.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent maiden visit to Srinagar post 2024 Lok Sabha elections early this month promised not only assembly elections and restoration of statehood but he also made it emphatically clear that the next popular Government in Jammu & Kashmir to be elected through free and fair proposed assembly elections would be free to Govern Jammu & Kashmir the way previous popular Governments used to govern it. The Promises of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on free and fair assembly elections, restoration of statehood and governance in view of his brilliant track record of keeping promises both at the centre and as well as in the states across the country give people of Jammu & Kashmir the confidence of looking forward to a bright future for electoral democracy in coming years.”

In fact post August 2019 decisions on Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation and Abrogation Of Article 370 has brought to full circle the constitutional integration of Jammu & Kashmir with the rest of the country like all states and union territories of the country. What matters the most is the fact that Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent maiden visit to Srinagar post 2024 Lok Sabha elections early this month promised not only assembly elections and restoration of statehood but he also made it emphatically clear that the next popular Government in Jammu & Kashmir to be elected through free and fair proposed assembly elections would be free to Govern Jammu & Kashmir the way previous popular Governments used to govern it. The Promises of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on free and fair assembly elections, restoration of statehood and governance in view of his brilliant track record of keeping promises both at the centre and as well as in the states across the country give people of Jammu & Kashmir the confidence of looking forward to a bright future for electoral democracy in coming years.
