“Kashmir and Ladhak home to glaciers and as such vulnerable to glacial recession in certain areas has at last caught the attention of the Jammu & Kashmir Government with none else than Chief Secretary Attal Dulloo taking keen interest in starting a “consequentially meaningful study” on glacial lakes.”

The climate change among many rising threats to environment is also a cause for glacial recession in the eyes of environmentalists in many parts of the world and Jammu & Kashmir Government is also now viewing seriously the increasing vulnerability of certain areas to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).  Kashmir and Ladhal home to glaciers and as such vulnerable to glacial recession in certain areas has at last caught the attention of the Jammu & Kashmir Government with none else than Chief Secretary Attal Dulloo taking keen interest in starting a “consequentially meaningful study” on glacial lakes. The study would be undertaken obviously to look for certain measures that are required to reduce the vulnerability of the certain populations to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) both in Kashmir valley and some areas of Jammu division. The Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) has as such become a matter of concern for J&K Disaster Management Authority headed by Chief Secretary himself. The  head of the disaster management authority himself showing interest in a study on Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs)is quite satisfying for both the environmentalists and as well as population vulnerable to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). Obviously such a study could be used as basis for devising and implementing certain measures for reducing the vulnerability of some populations to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Jammu & Kashmir.

“The threats caused to glaciers in view of increasing heat waves in parts of Kashmir, parts of Jammu division and Ladhak region necessitate an immediate intervention from the Government . While the conduct of the study on Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Jammu & Kashmir is a good beginning, the completion of such a study in a given time frame could expedite the process of neutralising the threats of  Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). A collaboration between the J&K Disaster Management Authority with National Disaster Management Authority could expedite the process of completing the study in given timeline.”

The Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) are a  sever threat not only to populations in the vicinity of glacial lakes but also to the infrastructural facilities built in such areas for bigger public conveniences . In decades of increasing attention on climate the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) were never ever discussed either by the Government or the environmentalist and for the first in decades of debate on climate change the Government has noticed the threats caused by climate change to glacial lakes in Jammu & Kashmir. The threats caused to glaciers in view of increasing heat waves in parts of Kashmir, parts of Jammu division and Ladhak region necessitate an immediate intervention from the Government . While the conduct of the study on Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Jammu & Kashmir is a good beginning, the completion of such a study in a given time frame could expedite the process of neutralising the threats of  Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). A Collaboration between the J&K Disaster Management Authority with National Disaster Management Authority could expedite the process of completing the study in given timeline.
