Education has undergone a huge transformation and in the process teacher-student relationship has unfortunately come down to a new low in Jammu & Kashmir like many states and union territories of the country. Technological interventions may have improved the standards of teaching-learning process but conduct and behaviour of the students in classes is not as good as it used to be decades go. The fear of accountability clearly visible in classrooms decades ago is altogether missing equally in Government and Private schools in Jammu and Kashmir. In the decades long process of educational transformation the children have unfortunately lost connection with the social values for which Jammu & Kashmir was known both within and outside the country. Unfortunately the reduced attention of the parents towards the conduct and behaviour of their children has reduced the fear of accountability among them not only in classrooms but also at their homes. Youth turning to drug addiction, assaults on teachers in schools and elders at their homes has largely contributed to the rising fear of life and safety fast growing among the elders at the very fag end of their lives across Jammu & Kashmir. The conduct and behaviour of the students towards their teachers and elders as such disturbs not only the atmosphere in class rooms but also the standards of family life across Jammu & Kashmir. As exceptions are always there and may be in exceptional cases students behave well with their teachers and elders and surely there is no dearth of right thinking people in Jammu & Kashmir as well.

While the onus of developing spirits of competition among students through quality coaching lies on the teachers in schools, the character building of children by their parents would most probably create a fear of accountability in them both in the schools and as well as at their homes. “

Decades ago parents would expect that teachers have more interest in character-building of the students but now parents know that teachers have no interest in character building of the student and as as such they tend to take care of the conduct and behaviour of their children themselves.
