Baramulla College EVS dept observes World Environment Week

Baramulla: Autonomous Govt Degree College Baramulla’s Department of Environmental Sciences observed World Environment Week by organising a variety of programmes for the students.

The event, having the theme of  ‘Land resources, Desertification and Drought resilience’, was observed from June 5 to 11.

At the onset of the week, the college organised a pledge-signing ceremony which witnessed participation from the students and the faculty from various departments.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal of the college, Prof. (Dr.) Neelofar Bhat, stressed on the need to understand the importance of land resources.

“It is important for our survival and realising our role in the preservation of the environment as a whole,” she said.

She also encouraged the students to organise awareness programmes on and outside the campus and make it a regular feature.

A mega cleanliness drive was also organised in the college lawns and parks, which was followed by an awareness programme for the student groups.

A National Seminar cum Webinar was also organised in which Prof. M.Y. Zargar (Emeritus Scientist and Former Dean SKUAST-K) and Dr. Sunil Neeri (Professor and Scientist, CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur) were the invited speakers.

The events were coordinated by the Head Environmental Sciences Department, Dr Humaira Qadri, Dr. Sameer Farooq, Dr. Basharat Hamid, and Dr. Saleem Ahmad.

Prof Zargar in his talk discussed the various issues associated with different types of waste and techniques of converting waste to wealth.

He also highlighted the various waste conversion techniques and technologies that SKUAST-K has developed and introduced for the benefit of the farmers.

Dr. Sunil Kumar, in his online talk, discussed the various measures and technologies that have successfully been adopted for waste reduction and management eventually leading to preservation of the precious land resources.
