The celebration was organized to raise awareness among people regarding the importance of milk and milk products in our daily diets. The theme for this year’s celebrations is, ‘Dairy and its role in giving people the nutrients they need to stay healthy.’
Director Animal Husbandry Jammu, Dr. Waheeda Parveen said that the day is commemorated every-year since 2001 when it was first celebrated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. “The idea behind this celebration was to highlight how dairy helps nourish people around the globe” she added. She further said that milk supplies much needed nutrients like proteins, vitamins and minerals which make it an important food for growing children, pregnant women, adults, old-age persons and patients alike.
She further emphasized on processing of milk for value addition to avoid economic losses to farmers due to spoilage of milk or lower prices. She further acknowledged the contribution of our dairy farmers for their efforts put into shaping the growth of our dairy sector paving the way for us to become the largest milk producing country in the world from 1998 onwards.
The Director said that the Department of Animal Husbandry Jammu is working dedicatedly for augmenting milk productivity of our farm animals through latest technological interventions like introduction of sex sorted semen and newer higher yielding varieties of fodder seeds.
She further said that the department has doubled its efforts in terms of establishing more dairy units in the division through induction of elite milch animals from outside as well as planned cross breeding. On the occasion the Director, on behalf of the department, extended heartiest greetings to the entire farming community and ensured them every possible support in all their endeavors.
