“Traffic Police Already directed to exercise heightened vigilance at flyover junctions”

Srinagar: The National Highway Authority of India has confirmed that the construction of three vital flyovers at Sanat Nagar, Nowgam, and Bemina junctions along the Srinagar expressway bypass on NH44 remains on course for completion by August 2024. With progress at full throttle, NHAI’s spokesperson hinted at the likelihood of meeting the ambitious August deadline.
Recognizing the inconveniences faced by the public amidst ongoing construction, the spokesperson assured that the traffic police department has been directed to exercise heightened vigilance at these junctions. “Given the narrowness of the roads, significant bottlenecks are inevitable. We’ve urged the traffic police to be extra cautious. By July or August 2024, we anticipate these flyovers to be fully operational,” affirmed the spokesperson. To combat traffic congestion at critical intersections like Bemina, Sanat Nagar, and Nowgam, NHAI had proposed the construction of three 3.23 km flyovers in Srinagar along NH-44, estimated to cost around 100 crores in 2020. These intersections have long been a source of frustration for commuters, often resulting in prolonged traffic snarls.
Residents are cautiously optimistic about the projects, hopeful for improved transportation in Srinagar, a region witnessing a significant vehicular influx from north to south Kashmir. “It’s reassuring to see action being taken. We hope these projects stay on track and avoid the delays typical of other developments in the region,” remarked Mumtaz Ahmad, a regular commuter. In addressing plans to ease congestion at Natipora junction, notorious for its daily traffic woes, NHAI officials revealed a comprehensive survey of trouble spots, with instructions issued to relevant agencies for prompt resolution. “Our surveys extend beyond Natipora to all congestion points, with measures being implemented under the smart city and national highway projects. Outer roads are also receiving due attention, supported by beacon assistance,” the spokesperson added. He said the completion of the flyovers at Sanat Nagar, Nowgam, and Bemina junctions along the Srinagar expressway bypass will bring several significant benefits to the common people. Firstly, it will reduce travel time for commuters. With flyovers in place, travelers will experience smoother and faster journeys through these previously congested junctions. This means less time spent stuck in traffic and more time for productive activities or relaxation.
The spokesman said that completion of these flyovers will improve safety on the roads. The narrow roads and congested junctions often posed safety hazards for both drivers and pedestrians. By eliminating these bottlenecks, the risk of accidents will decrease, making travel safer for everyone. “These flyovers will enhance convenience for daily commuters and travelers. No longer will they have to navigate through long queues of vehicles or endure frustrating delays at these critical intersections. The flyovers will provide a more convenient and hassle-free route for their journeys,” he said. The spokesman said that efficient transportation infrastructure is crucial for economic growth. By facilitating smoother movement of goods and people, these flyovers will contribute to increased productivity and business opportunities in the region. ‘The reduction in traffic congestion and associated pollution will lead to an overall improvement in the quality of life for residents living in the vicinity of these junctions. Cleaner air and less noise pollution will contribute to a healthier and more pleasant living environment,” he said. The NHAI spokesman said that completion of these flyovers will not only streamline traffic flow but also bring tangible benefits in terms of time savings, safety, convenience, economic growth, and overall well-being for the common people of Srinagar and surrounding areas.
