The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated on May 22nd each year to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. It’s an opportunity to highlight the importance of preserving and protecting the variety of life on Earth.Biological diversity, often referred to as biodiversity, encompasses the variety of life on Earth at all levels, from genes to ecosystems. It includes diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems. There exist over 8 million species of plants and animals on earth, according to an estimates made by biologists. However, only around 1.2 million species have been identified and described so far. Millions of other organisms remain a complete mystery. Biological diversity differs extensively across the globe, having places with high biodiversity, like rainforests and low biodiversity areas, as agricultural fields. Rich biological diversity is often regarded as a sign of a healthy ecosystem. However, much of the biodiversity on earth now is in jeopardy due to human exploitation that disturbs and even destroys ecosystems. Ecosystem, species, wild population, local population, local varieties and breeds of domesticated plants and animals are shrinking, deteriorating or vanishing.Biodiversity provides numerous benefits to humans, including ecosystem services such as clean air and water, pollination of crops, climate regulation, and cultural and recreational values. However, biodiversity is currently facing unprecedented threats due to human activities such as habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation of resources, and climate change. Protecting and conserving biodiversity is essential for maintaining the health of ecosystems, ensuring food security, and mitigating the impacts of environmental change.Celebrating biological diversity is crucial because it highlights the richness of life on Earth, fostering appreciation and respect for all living organisms. It reminds us of the interconnectedness of species and ecosystems, promoting conservation efforts to protect endangered species and preserve habitats. Additionally, diverse ecosystems provide essential services like clean air, water, and food, making biodiversity conservation vital for human well-being and survival. On May 22, 1992, the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity was adopted by the United Nations at a conference in Nairobi, Kenya. Since 2001, the international day for Biological Diversity is celebrated each year on the anniversary of this date. There is a separate theme for Biological diversity day since 2002 each year, which emphasizes different aspects of biodiversity. The International Day for Biological Diversity raises awareness about this issue and calls for action to protect our planet’s biodiversity. Every year, the United Nations announces a unique theme for the day and holds conferences, seminars, etc. with global leaders and environmentalists. As the global community is called to re-examine our relationship to the natural world, one thing is certain: despite all our technological advances we are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy, just to name a few. If you’re looking for a day to show your love for our planet, why not celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22? This is a day dedicated to making sure that Earth remains a place where all creatures—no matter what environment they depend on—can not only survive, but also thrive. “Be part of the Plan”, the theme of International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2024, is a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also referred to as the Biodiversity Plan. In 2024, biological diversity continued to face significant threats due to habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and invasive species.

“The day serves as a reminder of the need to protect and conserve the variety of life on Earth, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, as well as the ecosystems that support them. It’s an opportunity for governments, organizations, and individuals to take action towards safeguarding biodiversity for future generations. In brief, ethical approach to conserving biodiversity involves conserving biodiversity because each organism has an intrinsic value, and conserving it is our responsibility. It is our moral duty to pass on our biological legacy in good order to future generations.”

Efforts to conserve and protect biodiversity were ongoing, including the establishment of protected areas, conservation programs, and international agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity. However, the pace of species loss and ecosystem degradation remained a concern, highlighting the need for continued global action to safeguard Earth’s rich variety of life.Protecting biological diversity involves a combination of conservation efforts, sustainable practices, and policy interventions. Here are some strategies:1. Establishing protected areas: Designating protected areas helps conserve habitats and species, providing safe havens for biodiversity.2. Sustainable land use: Promoting sustainable agricultural practices, forestry, and urban planning to minimize habitat destruction.3. Combatting climate change: Addressing climate change helps mitigate its impact on biodiversity by reducing habitat loss, extreme weather events, and ocean acidification.4. Reducing pollution: Implementing measures to reduce pollution in air, water, and soil to safeguard ecosystems and the species within them.5. Sustainable resource management: Adopting sustainable fishing, hunting, and harvesting practices to prevent overexploitation of species.6. Public awareness and education: Increasing awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the threats it faces, encouraging individuals to take action.7. Collaboration and international cooperation: Working together across borders to address global challenges and protect biodiversity on a larger scale.Sure, let’s delve a bit deeper. Biodiversity is often categorized into three main levels: 1. **Genetic Diversity**: This refers to the variety of genes within a species. It’s crucial for species to adapt to changing environments and for maintaining the health of populations.2. **Species Diversity**: This measures the variety of species within a habitat or ecosystem. It’s a reflection of the richness and abundance of different organisms in a given area.3. **Ecosystem Diversity**: This refers to the variety of ecosystems within a region. Ecosystems range from forests and grasslands to wetlands and coral reefs, each supporting a unique combination of species and ecological processes. The loss of biodiversity threatens all, including our health. It has been proven that biodiversity loss could expand zoonoses – diseases transmitted from animals to humans- while, on the other hand, if we keep biodiversity intact, it offers excellent tools to fight against pandemics like those caused by coronaviruses. While there is a growing recognition that biological diversity is a global asset of tremendous value to future generations, the number of species is being significantly reduced by certain human activities. Given the importance of public education and awareness about this issue, the UN decided to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity annually. Biodiversity provides numerous benefits to humanity, including ecosystem services such as food, medicine, and climate regulation. Preserving biodiversity is essential for sustainable development and the well-being of current and future generations. Efforts to conserve biodiversity involve a combination of measures, including protected areas, sustainable land management practices, and international cooperation.International Day for Biological Diversity, established by the United Nations, aims to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity for sustainable development. Each year, it focuses on a specific theme related to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem preservation. The day serves as a reminder of the need to protect and conserve the variety of life on Earth, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, as well as the ecosystems that support them. It’s an opportunity for governments, organizations, and individuals to take action towards safeguarding biodiversity for future generations. In brief, ethical approach to conserving biodiversity involves conserving biodiversity because each organism has an intrinsic value, and conserving it is our responsibility. It is our moral duty to pass on our biological legacy in good order to future generations.
