“Unfortunately traffic police tends to be a mute spectator as minibus operators are seen violating traffic rules under broad day light even in the commercial hubs of Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir.”
As the road widening projects have not been executed well in time in Srinagar City and most of the inter-district routes connecting Srinagar with other district headquarters of Kashmir valley, the traffic congestion on roads triggers a huge traffic chaos more in Srinagar city and less in major towns of Kashmir Valley. Unfortunately the concerns of people on traffic chaos in Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir valley are not taken as serious as they should have been taken by the traffic police both in Srinagar city and as well as on inter-district routes connecting Srinagar with other district headquarters of Kashmir Valley..The congestion on roads irritates commuters not only in peak morning and evening hours but also in the day time. Unfortunately traffic police tends to be a mute spectator as minibus operators are seen violating traffic rules under broad day light even in the commercial hubs of Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir. While intense traffic violation drives were launched just a month ago to curb overloading in passenger vehicles, the traffic police does not initiate actions despite spotting passenger vehicles ferrying passengers on rooftops even in the outskirts of Srinagar city. Though rash driving is seen a major cause of the road accident death reported in recent months but unfortunately traffic violators are not punished for driving the passenger vehicles rashly and ferrying passengers on the roof tops. Hundreds of complaints about over-charging, fleecing of tourists, and loud music blaring from the passenger buses are reported from almost all parts of Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir valley day in and day out but drivers evade action as usual.
“While public transport system in urban parts of Kashmir has come under a huge stress due to increasing overloading in passenger buses and rash driving within and outside Srinagar City, the onus of reducing the increasing traffic congestion lies on traffic cops regulating the traffic in Srinagar city and on inter-district routes connecting Srinagar with other district headquarters of Kashmir Valley .”
As rash driving of the mini-buses run on the local routes in Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir valley heads to no dead end, the vulnerability of passenger buses to road accidents has increased hugely within and outside Srinagar City and more so during peak morning and evening hours. Curbs on traffic violations would surely reduce the vulnerability of passenger buses to road accidents but not without a strong vigil over the traffic regulation system in congested areas of Srinagar City and major towns of Kashmir Valley. While public transport system in urban parts of Kashmir has come under a huge stress due to increasing overloading in passenger buses and rash driving within and outside Srinagar City, the onus of reducing the increasing traffic congestion lies on traffic cops regulating the traffic in Srinagar city and on inter-district routes connecting Srinagar with other district headquarters of Kashmir Valley .
