New Delhi, May 11: New Delhi: The US has released a report raising concerns about the potential misuse of American-supplied weapons by Israel during the conflict in Gaza. Drafted by the State Department, the report sheds light on ongoing investigations into possible violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) but highlights the challenge of verifying the specific use of US weapons in alleged breaches.
Nonetheless, considering Israel’s significant reliance on US-made defence articles, the report deemed it reasonable to assess that these weapons have been utilized by Israeli forces in ways inconsistent with international humanitarian law since October 7.
In addition to its critique of military operations, the report touches on Israel’s initial lack of full cooperation with US efforts to facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza, though it notes improvements in this regard over time.
David Satterfield, a key contributor to the report and former US ambassador to Turkey, emphasized its significance as the first of its kind. He affirmed that the US remains committed to closely monitoring Israeli actions and their compliance with international norms.
This report comes amid heightened tensions, with President Biden publicly warning of potential restrictions on certain weapons transfers to Israel should it pursue a major offensive in Gaza.
As such, it underscores the delicate balance between US support for Israel and its commitment to upholding international humanitarian standards.
