Pulwama: In an initiative aligned to the guidelines of ECI and to promote inclusivity and accessibility in the General Election to Lok Sabha 2024, a special effort is being made to establish Pink Polling Stations managed by women in each Assembly Segment. Additionally, one polling station in each Assembly Segment will be managed by Persons with Disabilities (PwD) and youth, equipped with all necessary facilities in District Pulwama.
The aim of establishing these special polling stations is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that inspires more women and youth to participate in the electoral process.
District Election Officer (DEO) Pulwama, Dr. Basharat Qayoom emphasised the importance of creating an election process that caters to the diverse needs of all citizens. “It is crucial that we create a supportive and accessible environment for all individuals to exercise their right to vote. By establishing Pink Polling Stations, all women managed, and dedicated polling stations for Persons with Disabilities and Youth, we are taking a significant step towards ensuring that no one is left behind in the electoral process,” said Dr. Basharat.
The introduction of pink polling stations aims to empower women to actively participate in the electoral process by providing a safe and welcoming space where their voices can be heard. These stations will be managed entirely by women, creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere that encourages more female voters, which constitute 50% of total electorate, to engage in the democratic process and exercise their right to vote across the district.
Furthermore, the provision of dedicated polling stations for Persons with Disabilities reflects a commitment to accessibility and inclusivity in the electoral process. These stations will be equipped with all necessary facilities to ensure that voters with disabilities can cast their votes comfortably and independently. It is worth mentioning that all polling stations in the district are equipped with assured minimum facilities (AMF) that include Ramps, wheel chairs, water supply, power supply, toilets and other basic services including Braille facilities on Ballot units catering to visually impaired voters.
By removing barriers to voting, the General Lok Sabha Election 2024 seeks to promote the full participation of all citizens in shaping the future of the nation.
In addition to the specially designed polling stations, efforts are being made to create youth-attractive polling stations that appeal to the younger generation. These stations will feature engaging and innovative elements to capture the interest of young voters and inspire their active involvement in the electoral process. This aims to engage young, especially first time voters, to exercise their right to vote with enthusiasm.
The General Lok Sabha Election 2024 is committed to promoting gender equality, accessibility, and youth engagement in the electoral process. Through initiatives such as pink polling stations, dedicated polling stations for Persons with Disabilities, and youth-attractive polling stations, the Election Commission is striving to create a more inclusive and participatory democracy.
