GDC Marh celebrates Earth Day

Jammu : Eco Club of Government Degree College (GDC), Marh celebrated Earth day on Monday by organizing an environment awareness event on the College campus here.
The event themed ‘Planet v/s Plastics’, was held under the dynamic leadership of Principal, Prof. Dr. Rakesh Kumar Koul and addressed one of the most pressing environmental issues, that is, plastic pollution.
The Principal, in his address, stressed that this day is dedicated to educate and mobilize individuals and communities on the importance of the environment; the necessity of its preservation and restoration.
The theme of this year especially focuses on reducing plastic pollution and a commitment in making sustainable choices that will ensure a livable future for all. Students of 4th and 2nd semester namely Ayush, Navpreet, Raveena, Sonia, Palak, Roshni prepared beautiful decorative items out of plastic waste like pen holders, pots, flowers, etc.
The activity was coordinated by Dr. Shakun Sharma (HOD Sociology), Prof. Anjana Chib (HOD EVS) and Mohit Kalotra. The occasion was graced by Prof. Madhvi Parasher (HOD Botany) and Kahkeshan Shahnaz. It is pertinent to mention here that the college has already taken initiative to process plastic waste by having MOU with RUDA.

GCW Parade celebrates Earth Day
Jammu : The Science Club and Eco Club of Government College for Women (GCW) Parade Ground in collaboration with J&K Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, on Monday celebrated World Earth Day by organizing two competitive events; Poster Making Competition and Powerpoint presentation competition on the theme – Planet vs Plastics.
The Guest of honour for the event was Sajjad Ahmed Khan, Environment Soil Conservationist, J&K Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing.
Dr Kirti, Programme Officer, J&K Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing also attended the event.
The event was graced by the Principal Dr R. K. Tickoo and Convenor, Science Club, Prof. Anjali Abrol along with organizing committee including Dr. Harmanmeet Kour Head Department of EVS, Prof. Usha Devi, Dr Sarita Parihar, Dr. Neha Gupta , Prof. Surbhi Gupta, Dr. Manjulla Gupta, Dr. Bhawandeep Kour, Dr. Sushma Sharma and Dr. Atiya Syed.
Students participated in the event with great zeal and fervor. The Powerpoint presentation competition was judged by Dr. Sushma Chib, Head Department of Mathematics, Prof. Tahira Firdous, Head Department of Botany, Prof. Shamim Akhter, Associate Professor in Zoology.
The Poster Making Competition was judged by Dr. Ritu Magotra, Head Department of English and Dr. Archana Gupta, Associate Professor in Zoology.
The students were awarded in the valedictory ceremony and gift hampers were given to all the participants of both the competitions by J&K Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing.

GCW Gandhinagar celebrates World Earth Day
Jammu : In commemoration of World Earth Day, NSS Unit 1 of Government College for Women (GCW), Gandhinagar, in collaboration with the Department of Botany, Cluster University of Jammu, organised a poster making competition aimed at raising awareness about environmental conservation and sustainable living to mark World Earth Day celebrations.
The event, held on the College Campus, witnessed enthusiastic participation from NSS volunteers. Participants showcased their artistic talents while conveying powerful messages about the importance of protecting our planet and adopting eco-friendly practices. The theme of this year’s Earth Day, “Planet Vs Plastic”, resonated throughout the event, inspiring participants to reflect on pressing environmental challenges facing our planet and the urgent need for collective action.
Principal of the College, Dr. SP Saraswat expressed delight at overwhelming response to the competition. He said, “it is heartening to see young minds coming forward with innovative ideas to address environmental issues”. He added that through this competition, we aim to encourage students to think creatively and become ambassadors for environmental conservation.
The judging panel, comprising of Dr. Harpreet Bhatia from Cluster University of Jammu and Prof. Sunita from Dept of Social Work, GCW Gandhinagar, evaluated the posters based on creativity, relevance to the theme, and effectiveness of message conveyed.
The winners of the competition were awarded certificates and prizes, recognizing their efforts in promoting environmental awareness and inspiring others to take action for a sustainable future.
The event was organised by NSS PO Unit 1 of GCW Gandhinagar and Coordinator Botany Prof Sugandha Mahajan and coordinated by Prof Isha of the Dept of Botany CLUJ.
Among the faculty, Dr. Arun Khajuria, Dr. Mohd Saleem, Dr. Pankaj Kumar, Dr. Anjali and non-teaching Faculty Deepika Charak and Parvinder Kaur were also present.
