“Don’t…”: Biden’s stern warning to Iran as fears mount over potential retaliation to Israeli airstrike

New Delhi, April 13: US President Joe Biden, addressing reporters at the White House on Friday, expressed his expectation of an imminent Iranian attack on Israel. With fears escalating over potential retaliation following an air strike that claimed the lives of top commanders earlier this month, Biden emphasized the United States’ steadfast commitment to Israel’s defence.

“I don’t want to get into secure information but my expectation is sooner than later,” Biden stated in response to questions about the timing of a possible Iranian assault on Israel. Urging Iran to refrain from aggression, he succinctly conveyed his message: “Don’t.”

As concerns mount over the possibility of a broader regional conflict, the White House has underscored the real and credible threat posed by Iran. Despite declining to specify the timing of the potential attack, the US National Security Council remains vigilant, with constant updates provided to President Biden by his national security team.

Media reported that recent intelligence reports suggest Iran’s internal mobilization of military assets, including drones and cruise missiles, fuelling speculation of preparations for strikes on Israeli targets from within Iranian territory.

While Israel has not officially acknowledged responsibility for the air strike on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria, it is widely believed to have been behind the operation. Emphasizing Israel’s readiness to defend itself, Biden reiterated the United States’ unwavering support for its ally.

The situation has intensified following a barrage of rockets launched from Lebanon toward Israel by unidentified actors, on Friday raising tensions in the region. However, there were no reported casualties or indications of involvement from external parties.

Amidst escalating rhetoric and heightened security measures, diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further escalation. Key stakeholders, including the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are engaging with Iran to urge restraint and de-escalation.

As Israel braces for potential threats, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has convened his war cabinet to assess the situation. While the government has not issued new directives to the public, preparations for potential attacks, including evaluating the readiness of public shelters, are underway.

The recent strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus has claimed the lives of several senior Iranian military leaders, further exacerbating tensions. With officials in multiple countries fearing the prospect of a wider regional conflict, diplomatic channels remain crucial in averting further escalation. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant reaffirmed the strong bond between Israel and the United States, vowing a resolute response to any threats.

As the situation unfolds, the international community remains on edge, hoping for diplomatic resolutions to prevail in this volatile standoff.

India Urges Caution Amidst Escalating Tensions

MEA Spokesperson in response to a question on Iran -Israel tension on April 4 said, “We have noted with concern the attack on Iranian diplomatic premises in Syria on 1 April 2024. India is distressed at the escalating tensions in West Asia, and their potential to fuel further violence and instability. We urge all parties to avoid actions that go against commonly accepted principles and norms of International Law.”

Meanwhile, India has implemented travel restrictions for its citizens planning to visit Iran and Israel. The move comes amidst concerns over potential attacks by Iran and retaliation from Israeli troops. In a press release, Randhir Jaswal, Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, stated, “In view of the prevailing situation in the region, all Indians are advised not to travel to Iran or Israel until further notice.” Jaswal further added, “All those currently residing in Iran or Israel are requested to contact Indian Embassies there and register themselves. They are also urged to exercise utmost caution for their safety and limit their movements to the minimum.”
