Ganderbal : Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A Ravinder Nath kick-started a weeklong plantation drive under the theme “Each One Plant One”, at the varsity’s Tulmulla campus here on Thursday.
The drive is being organised by the varsity’s Division of Landscape and Green Mission in collaboration with the Rahim Greens, Sindh Forest and Social Forestry Divisions of Ganderbal.
Prof. A Ravinder Nath planted a sapling and called the initiative aimed at fostering a sense of responsibility towards nature and encouraging the community to contribute to a greener tomorrow. “As a learning institution, it is our prime duty not only to impart knowledge, but also to instil values of environmental consciousness and sustainability. Plantation Day serves as a reminder of our interconnectedness with nature and the imperative to safeguard it for future generations,” he remarked. He asked the Landscape division to actively involve the students, scholars and faculty from all the departments, for making the drive successful.
Speaking on the occasion, Dean School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Prof. Mohammad Yousuf, who also planted a sapling, said, the plantation drives are imperative to maintain the ecological balance and to address the endemic environmental issues, confronted by the Kashmir division.
In his address, Dean, School of Education, and Planning and Development Officer, Prof. Zahoor Ahmad Geelani, reiterated the varsity’s commitment aimed at reducing carbon footprints and promoting green energy.
Chairman Rahim Greens, Mr. Abdul Hamid Bhat, said that his group has planted more than 2.6 lakh saplings across Kashmir since 2009, including in the areas of deforestation. He assured full support and cooperation to CUKashmir in its endeavours of making the campus environment friendly.
Officer, In-Charge, Division of Landscape & Green Mission, Dr. Muhammad Latief, said that by fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, the university endeavours to empower individuals to become agents of positive change in their communities and beyond.
