New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a social reform and a basic demand of democracy.
“The Uniform Civil Code is a huge social reform. This is a basic demand of democracy. The laws should not be based on religions, but should be in the interest of the public and based on prevailing situations,” Shah said at the TV9 Bharatvarsh conclave in the national capital. He highlighted that the constituent assembly, under the Directive Principles of State Policy, had proposed that the Parliament implement the Uniform Civil Code at the right time.
“This is nothing new; we have been demanding it since the formation of the party. I do not understand what went wrong with the Congress party”, added the Union Home Minister.
Shah further asserted that after the Lok Sahba polls, all the states and the central governments would ponder implementing the UCC countrywide.
“The UCC has been implemented in Uttarakhand. There should be social, judicial and constitutional scrutiny of the same. By the time of the Lok Sabha polls, it will be completed, and later, all states and the centre will ponder over it,” he said.
The Uniform Civil Code, or the UCC, proposes similar laws for people, regardless of their religion or community. The Uttarakhand assembly recently gave a nod to it.
Highlighting the work done by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government during the past 10 years, Shah said, “Since 2014, Modiji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) has taken tough decisions from time to time. We never made decisions to suit the eyes of the public; rather, we made the ones that were in the interest of the public. There is a huge difference between the two. We made the decision of ‘One Rank, One Pension’, the demand for which had been being raised by the army for the last 40 years. We brought demonetization. We implemented GST (Goods and Services Tax). The whole world is looking at us now.”
“We fulfilled the dream of ‘Digital India’. Nobody in the country would have imagined this! Through surgical strike and air strike, we gave the message that we wouldn’t tolerate any disturbance made to our army. We gave rights to lakhs of Muslim women by eradicating triple talaq. Today, Kashmir is an inseparable part of the country. The country cannot run with two laws and constitutions,” he added.
Shah further underscored that the BJP works in favour of the public.
“We introduced the New Education Policy. Through the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, women were made a part of the policy-making bodies. Narendra Modiji worked to eradicate nepotism and appeasement. We do not care about the vote bank; we work in the interest of the public,” he said.
