Grid Installation: Illuminating Lights Greet Gurez After 75 Years

Last week Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) declared the successful grid connectivity of Gurez Valley in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district. This development is a historic breakthrough, as Gurez becomes the latest region to be illuminated, breaking free from its long-standing reliance on diesel generator sets. In a social media post on X, the KPDCL expressed their enthusiasm, saying “The KPDCL is thrilled to share that Gurez now enjoys grid connectivity with the successful charging of the 33kV Line and RSTN Dawar, overcoming challenging terrain. This marks a significant milestone as it brings electricity to the only area in Kashmir that relied on DG sets.” The challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions in Gurez Valley posed formidable obstacles for the project. However, the successful charging of the 33kV Line and RSTN Dawar showcases the technical prowess and determination of the teams involved in overcoming these challenges. The electrification of Gurez Valley is a part of the broader initiative by the government to ensure comprehensive and equitable access to electricity across all regions, regardless of their geographical remoteness. The culmination of this project is expected to have a profound impact on the lives of the local population, providing them with a reliable and sustainable source of power for the first time since Independence. This achievement resonates with the commitment of the authorities to improve the quality of life in even the most secluded areas. The KPDCL’s announcement marks not only the addition of Gurez to the national electricity grid but also symbolizes progress, development, and empowerment for the resilient residents of the Valley. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed jubilation as Gurez Valley in Jammu and Kashmir achieved a historic milestone with grid connectivity, marking a transformative day for the region that had historically faced isolation during the winter months due to heavy snowfall. Sinha termed it a “historic day for Gurez” and emphasized the significance of this achievement in his statement.

“Historic day for Gurez! Grid connectivity reached the pristine valley for the first time after the country’s independence. 33/11kV Receiving Station energized today benefitting 1,500 consumers of various panchayats, and efforts are on to connect all the villages in a phased manner,” remarked Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Sinha highlighted the transformative impact of this development, especially during the challenging winter months when Gurez Valley often experienced isolation due to heavy snowfall. The successful energization of the 33/11kV Receiving Station not only brings relief to the residents but also signifies a broader effort to enhance connectivity, improve living conditions, and stimulate economic growth in the region. The Lieutenant Governor’s commitment to extending the grid connectivity to all villages in a phased manner demonstrates a comprehensive approach towards inclusive development. As 1,500 consumers across various panchayats benefit from this electrification, the focus remains on reaching every corner of Gurez Valley, ensuring that no community is left untouched by the positive impacts of reliable and continuous electricity. The announcement by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha adds a layer of official recognition to the historic achievement, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by remote regions. Gurez Valley, now connected to the grid, stands as a testament to the transformative power of infrastructure development, promising a brighter and more connected future for its resilient residents.

Exciting Responses Of Locals: Saima Bano, a local school teacher, shared her thoughts, “Teaching without proper lighting was a challenge. Now, with electricity, we can provide a better learning environment for our children. It’s a moment of pride and relief for all of us.” As news of the grid connectivity spread through the valley, residents gathered to share their stories of enduring winters without electricity.  Ghulam Nabi, a village elder, remarked with a smile, “In all my years, I never thought I’d see this day. The young ones won’t understand what it means to go through the winter with no lights. Now, they won’t have to.” Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s commitment to connecting all villages in a phased manner has fueled hope among the locals.  Shabnam Malik, a resident involved in community work, stated, “It’s not just about lights; it’s about progress. We hope this is the beginning of many more positive changes for Gurez.”
