Last year, I attended a two day national scientific program on oncology “NZ – AROICON 2022” as a delegate under theme “Personalized to Precision Oncology – Data Driven Approach” in Jammu. The theme “Personalized to Precision Oncology – Data driven approach”, in simple terms meaning individualizing the cancer treatment lines and giving “right treatment for right person” based on scientific evidence and research. The scientific program was organized in hybrid mode as the 26th Annual conference of North Zone Association of Radiation Oncologists of India and the Organizing Secretary of the program was leading oncologist, Dr. Vikas Roshan from Jammu. During the program, scientific sessions were held wherein various expert faculty from premier medical institutions of India put thorough emphasis on various common cancers with particular reference to their recent advances in diagnosis, detection and treatment, vis-a-vis review in scientific literature. I would say that “NZ-AROICON2022” was full of highly educative scientific sessions wherein various expert faculties of oncologists from premier medical institutions of India put thorough emphasis and discussed on various common cancers with particular reference to their recent advances in diagnosis, detection and treatment — backed by scientific evidence and research. It was a helpful program both academically and professionally; more so it was great to interact and listen some noted oncologists of India, who would have dealt with thousands of cancer patients during their practice as cancer physicians.

“Besides scientific programs, cancer awareness and education programs in the community are need of the times and oncologists have an important role to play in fostering such programs. There is a need to make common masses aware about healthy lifestyle, and more importantly cancer screening that is crucial in early detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention; as cancer is a treatable disease if detected and diagnosed at early stages”.

I had some exclusive educative interactions regarding cancer with noted oncologists like Dr. Rajesh Vashistha (President AROI), Dr. Rakesh Kapoor(President NZ-AROI) including others. Besides I got an opportunity to meet Dr. R K Chrungoo, an iconic surgeon, who had been my teacher also during my MBBS. At the end, I would like to pay my gratitude and kind regards to Dr. Vikas Roshanfor his dedication and commitment in taking various cancer awareness and education initiatives time and again in the community, besides organizing such highly educative scientific programs. While there is a deep rise of cancer cases since last decade, it is need of the hour to augment cancer cure. And besides scientific programs, cancer awareness and education programs in the community are need of the times and oncologists have an important role to play in fostering such programs. There is a need to make common masses aware about healthy lifestyle, and more importantly cancer screening that is crucial in early detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention; as cancer is a treatable disease if detected and diagnosed at early stages.
