Mega functions held at Ang, Pul, G’bal, Kulgam to commemorate ‘Gandhi Jayanti’

Anantnag: On the eve of 154th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, mega functions were held at Anantnag, Pulwama, Ganderbal and Kulgam to pay rich tributes to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, revered as ‘Father of the Nation’.
On October 2 every year, people mark Gandhi Jayanti and remember the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi. The day is also observed as ‘International Day of Non-Violence’ to disseminate the message of non-violence.
At Anantnag: The main function, presided over by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anantnag, S. F. Hamid was held at the auditorium of Women’s Degree College Anantnag. Speaking on the occasion, S F Hamid said that Gandhi Jayanti celebrations are a reflection of the enduring impact of Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings and principles. His unwavering commitment to truth and non-violence served as a catalyst for India’s struggle for independence, and his ideas continue to inspire the generations. He further added that with Gandhi Clubs established in each educational institution of the district the aim is to instill Gandhi Ji’s teachings in the minds of young learners. The focus is on fostering a sense of social responsibility and promoting the ideals of justice, equality, and harmony and creating ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. It is pertinent to mention that in the month of September a series of programs were held across the district to celebrate various tenets in the teaching and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. Such events included, debates, and competitions, seminars and discussions which were held to delve deeper into Gandhi’s philosophy and its relevance in contemporary society and how Gandhi Ji’s principles can guide us in addressing the challenges of our time. During Gandhi Jayanti celebration, students from various educational institutions performed cultural shows based on various themes of Gandhian Philosophy. It was a testament to the power of unity and peace, values deeply cherished by the Mahatma. Also throughout the event, various speakers delved into the depth of Gandhian philosophy and its enduring significance. They emphasized how Gandhi’s ideals of truth, non-violence, and social justice remain pillars of strength and guidance in our modern world. The speakers also stressed the importance of applying these principles to address contemporary challenges. The event concluded with the felicitation of all the students who had participated in the events held across the district in the month of September to celebrate the teachings of Gandhi Ji.
At Pulwama: The Government Degree College Boys Pulwama hosted an extraordinary celebration marking the culmination of activities conducted under the Gandhi Jayanti program across the district by the Education Department. The event was graced by the presence of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pulwama, Dr. BasharatQayoom, and centered on a captivating array of programs by students, reflecting the essence of Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring legacy. At the heart of the celebration was the active involvement of students in various engaging activities. The cultural program, a vibrant representation of India’s rich heritage, showcased the incredible talents of the young participants, who came together to honor the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. The highlight of the event was the stirring speeches delivered by the students, echoing the profound Gandhian ideology. They emphasized the virtues of non-violence (Ahimsa), self-reliance (AtmaNirbarta), and Swachhata (cleanliness), all of which resonate deeply with Gandhi Ji’s vision of a cleaner and more harmonious society. Floral tributes were offered by the DC to Gandhiji’s portrait as a mark of reverence before his eloquent speech. In his address, the DC applauded the exceptional performances of the students and speakers. He underscored the lasting importance of Gandhian principles, highlighting non-violence, self-reliance, and Swachhata as the cornerstones of a progressive society. While interacting with the students, DC shared insights into the preparation of Gram Panchayat plans and how they have transformed the landscape of plan formulation and grassroots-level initiatives. This empowering shift has brought about positive changes at the grassroots level, aligning with Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of self-sufficiency in rural India. He also celebrated the resounding success of the SwachhataAbhiyan, where the community’s active participation has significantly contributed to a cleaner environment. In a momentous announcement, the DC revealed plans to establish libraries among the five participating schools in the district. These libraries will house an array of books centered on Gandhian ideology, enriching the community’s understanding of the Mahatma’s timeless principles. The event was attended by esteemed guests, including the Chief Education Officer, Zonal Education Officers, dedicated teachers, and enthusiastic students.
At Ganderbal: The District Administration Ganderbalon Mondayorganised a mega Shanti rally which was kick-started by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ganderbal, Shyambir. The rally started from Mini-Secretariat Ganderbal and culminated at Qamaria Ground Ganderbal in which thousands of people including district Officers, Police Personnel, civil society, students, prominent citizens and media persons participated enthusiastically. The event started with a gathering of all participants in the lawns of Mini-Secretariat and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and remembered his teachings on cleanliness and non-violence. Speaking at the grand event held at Qamaria Ground, the DC said that 46 Panchayats of the district are declared NashaMuktPanchayats maintaining that the efforts put in by everyone were commendable. Highlighting the collective power of individuals coming together for the betterment of their community, the DC hoped that the District Ganderbal would become the first drug-free district in whole J&K with active involvement of local communities. Later, the DC administered NashaMukt pledge among participants who vowed to stay away from drugs and to make efforts to make Ganderbal drug-free. Swachhata pledge was also administered by President Municipal Council Ganderbal to adopt Gandhi Ji’s way of life and principles of empathy, humbleness, honesty and sincerity besides, promote Swachh Bharat to make people aware about the advantages of cleanliness. Meanwhile, a felicitation ceremony was also held in which various PRIs were felicitated by the Deputy Commissioner for their hard work and dedication in Nasha MuktAbhiyan.
At Kulgam: A mega function was held at the new conference hall of Mini Secretariat Kulgam to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The event was presided over by the Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Kulgam, Showkat Ahmad Rather. Speaking on the occasion, the ADDC highlighted the vision of Gandhiji including non-violence. He said that his teachings of swadeshi have been transformed into Atmanirbhar Bharat which aims at making the country self-sustaining and self-generating. He said Mahatma Gandhi was a great believer in equality of human beings without discrimination of any kind. Cleanliness, according to him, was what everyone should practice in their life, added ADDC. During the celebrations, Gram sabhas for formulation of plan for the year 2024-25 was also launched. Later, the ADDC administered Non-Violence Pledge among the participants. ADC Viqar Ahmed Giri, Joint Director Planning, ACR, ACD, ACP, CEO, CAO and other officers and officials attended the programme.
