“The Women’s Reservation Bill once implemented hopefully after six years from now will raise the representation of women in the parliament from just 15% to 33% and similarly the representation of women in state assembles will hopefully rise from just 10% to 33%”

With the passing of women’s reservation bill by both the Houses of Parliament the empowerment of women in parliament and state assemblies has come to a full circle as wait for the census and new delimitation of parliamentary and assembly constituencies would now obviously be the mere formalities to be completed by 2029, i.e., after six years from now. Like many contentious issues the incumbent BJP led NDA Government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has used it’s brute majority in the parliament to settle yet another contentious political issue. The women’s reservation bill is undoubtedly at landmark achievement of the incumbent Modi Government as this bill was at the centre of many political controversies for the last about three decades. The Women’s Reservation Bill once implemented hopefully after six years from now will raise the representation of women in the parliament from just 15% to 33% and similarly the representation of women in state assembles will hopefully rise from just 10% to 33%. With the implementation of 33% representation in the parliament and state assemblies the representation of women in the cabinet both at the centre and in the states and union territories would also be not less than 15-20%. So the women in both central and state governments will not only have a bigger role in law making but also in decisions making both at the centre and as well as in the states. With such a bigger role both in the law making and as well as the law enforcement the debate over the gender discrimination will be a history of past now.

“Before fielding semi literate or professionally incompetent women for the elections the leaders of the political parties will have to think hundred times before doing so just to secure their future in the elections. Never forget that when it comes to power politics the priority for the political parties is their survival which lies in their numerical strength both in the parliament and as well as state assemblies. Tough implementation of the bill is subject to completion of census and delimitation hopefully by 2029 but finally the intent of passing the bill and 33% reservation becoming a law unto itself rather than remaining a contentious issue of political debate matters the most” .

Instead of gender discrimination the gender equality would now be the new hallmark of electoral politics in India. Though critics still say that reservation of women in parliament and state assemblies will hardly make any difference as political parties won’t field qualified and professionally competent women in parliamentary and assembly elections but it is an irrefutable fact that political parties tending to set such trends would ultimately face reverses in the elections as in the present political era faces matter more than the political parties to which they belong. So before fielding semi literate or professionally incompetent women for the elections the leaders of the political parties will have to think hundred times before doing so just to secure their future in the elections. Never forget that when it comes to power politics the priority for the political parties is their survival which lies in their numerical strength both in the parliament and as well as state assemblies. Tough implementation of the bill is subject to completion of census and delimitation hopefully by 2029 but finally the intent of passing the bill and 33% reservation becoming a law unto itself rather than remaining a contentious issue of political debate matters the most .
