With the launch of a new scheme by Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) for the power consumers to help them reduce their power tariff bills and enjoy hassle free power supply the popularity of solar panels is growing fast both in Kashmir Valley and as well as Jammu division . Under this scheme the consumers see their power tariff bills reducing to at least half of that what they pay normally as they get the opportunity to also bank their surplus energy after installing solar panels in their homes. Presently the Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) is implementing a 20-Megawatt ‘Roof Top Solar Power Plant’ project in Jammu and Kashmir and has set the target of extending the facility of solar panels to 10,000 households. What matters the most is the fact that consumers are at liberty to install three, five or ten-kilowatt capacity solar panels as per their own conveniences and paying capacities and the facility one availed by the consumers drastically reduces their monthly power tariff bills. The scheme suits the people of even lower income groups as the Power Development Corporation has fast paced the process of installing smart meters both in Kashmir valley and as well as Jammu division despite protests by the consumers in both rural and urban areas for last more than two months. While the consumers are yet to understand it that smart meters are bidirectional and as such the energy generated from the solar panels is automatically transferred to the grid.
“What makes the use of solar panels affordable even for the people of income groups is the subsidy offered by Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA to those installing solar panels which goes up to 65 % of the total project cost and as such consumers pay just 35% of the total cost of the solar panels. To further popularise the scheme that JAKEDA has invited several companies which manufacture and market solar technologies to the expo to give consumers an opportunity to choose from a wide range of products. So better for consumer to cease the golden opportunity and install solar panels for their own conveniences and savings”.
Experiences show that consumers see their power tariff bills reducing when the number of units generated by the solar panels are deducted from the number of units consumed by the consumers and once this process continues the cost of installing the solar panels is recovered just in three years and the consumers are liable t to get lifetime facility of free power thereafter. Yet another huge advantage the consumers get in case of using solar panels is that in case they use less energy than what is generated by their plant, the excess energy is banked in their accounts for later use.
