Kathua: To prevent the suicidal ideations among college students, Department of Psychology Government Degree College Kathua, in collaboration with 2 JK Girls Bn NCC wing, launched “Green ribbon” campaign to mark “World Suicide Prevention Day”.
The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness about suicide and how to support those who may be struggling, honor survivors and remember those who have died. Wearing or displaying a suicide awareness ribbon is just one way to show how important the issue of suicide prevention is to you.
The whole program was conducted under the guidance and Supervision of Principal GDC Kathua Prof Seema Mir. Faculty members Prof. Raj Kiran, Dr. Kamaldeep Singh and Dr Jogbinder Singh Soodan were also present on the occasion.
The program was organized by Dr. Rachna Devi (ANO and coordinator Psychological counseling cell GDC Kathua) with the support of Dr. Sumi Saidullah (Lecturer, department of Psychology GDC Kathua).
More than 300 students from various semesters of undergraduate programs of GDC Kathua participated in the campaign.
Volunteer students Miss Saivi, Neha Sharma, Ananya, Yogesh Sharma, Riya Sharma, lakshay Anand, Yashvee gotra, Shivali Jasrotia and Deepak Jyoti Distributed green ribbons to all participating classes and encouraged students to wear green ribbon throughout the day. By encouraging students to wear the green ribbon, students can show their support for the campaign and their commitment to influencing positive change in society through creating safe spaces for talking about mental health.
Principal GDC Kathua Prof Seema Mir said that it’s fantastic that GDC Kathua is getting involved in green ribbon campaign to help tackle suicide cases among youth. Many young people still believe that mental health problems must remain hidden. “We want to change this perception and encourage people to have open and honest conversations about mental health/ suicide” she added.
The Principal further said that simply by wearing a green ribbon, you are letting students know its ok to have a conversation about mental health/suicidal ideation with you. This small act can help start a conversation about suicide prevention and let others know that you are there for them if they need someone to talk to. She also appreciated the efforts taken by organizers and participants of the event.
