Chennai|Aug, 6 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the transformation and major upgradation of 508 stations across the country involving an investment of Rs 25,000 crores under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) that included 25 stations in the Southern Railway.
These 508 stations will become world class after the upgradation. PM Modi laid the foundation stone via video-conferencing from New Delhi. Railway sources said that ceremonial functions were organized at all the 25 stations coming under the Southern Railway in the presence of elected representatives, eminent persons from various fields, sports persons, freedom fighters, school and college students, Government officials and rail passengers on Sunday. Of the total 25 stations in Southern Railway, 18 stations are in Tamil Nadu and they will be redeveloped and become modern with a investment of Rs 515 crores.
The proposed 18 Tamil Nadu Railway stations for redevelopment included Arakkonam junction, Chengalpattu junction, Guduvancheri, Gummidipoondi, Jolarpettai junction, Karur junction, Mayiladuthurai junction, Nagercoil junction, Perambur, Podanur junction, Salem junction, Tenkasi junction, Thanjavur junction, Tiruppur, Tiruttani, Tiruvallur, Villuppuram and Virudhunagar junctions. With the integration of Multi-model connectivity, the redeveloped stations will become the centre of socio-economic activities.
