New Delhi: Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 has been introduced in Lok Sabha on Tuesday amid uproar and sloganeering by opposition.

GNCTD (Amendment) Bill aims to replace an ordinance that provided the Centre control over Delhi services.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke on this Bill and said, “All objections of opposition parties are ‘political’ which don’t have a constitutional base.”

Shah said that the Constitution gives the house power to bring any law regarding Delhi.

Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that it is designed of digging up a graveyard for cooperative federalism. This bill takes away the powers of elected Delhi government to make laws regarding services.

AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi raised several questions regarding this bill and said that he opposed the bill as the government cannot change the constitution by a simple bill.

Replying to GNCTD (Amendment) Bill introduction in LS, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh said the Bill presented by the Centre is against the verdict of the Supreme Court, the Constitution and federal structure of the country.

“They may pass the Bill in the Lok Sabha, but in the Rajya Sabha the opposition has the number to defeat the bill,” Singh said.

Meanwhile, “We have seen a very corrupt government in Delhi in the recent past and it has subverted the very electoral mandate of people by the non-performance in the national capital,” BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi told UNI, while she was replying over AAP’s allegations about bringing GNCTD (Amendment) Bill 2023.

“If the Supreme Court in its judgement mentioned the Centre has every right to make the law then why the opposition is making hue and cry over the issue. The opposition’s sole purpose is to disrupt parliament proceedings,” BJP MP Manoj Tiwari told UNI.
