Srinagar: Rains lashed Jammu and Kashmir causing flash floods at various places as the weatherman predicted more showers during the next 24 hours, officials said on Sunday.

The MeT office predicted fairly widespread light to moderate rains during the next two days over Jammu and Kashmir.

The weather will generally remain cloudy with intermittent light to moderate rain or thundershower at a few places of Kashmir region, the MeT office said and added that from July 24 to 27 the weather is likely to remain partly to generally cloudy during daytime with possibility of light to moderate thundershower at many places, especially during late night or early morning.

The MeT office has also issued warning of risk of flash flood, mudslide, and landslides due to continuous rains since the past two days in the upper and prone reaches of the Kashmir valley .

“People are advised to remain cautious and stay away from streams, rivers and other vulnerable spots”, the MeT office warned.

An independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif said there is possibility of showers in some areas of the union territory on Sunday, especially in parts of north Kashmir.

He said intense showers, flash floods and cloudbursts can occur in a few spots while there is possibility of rain showers during the day over the next two days.

There were reports of flash floods caused by heavy rains and cloudburst at Faqir Gujjri in outskirts of Srinagar, several upper reaches of frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara and Kulgam in south Kashmir damaging standing crops.

In view of the inclement weather, the district authorities in Kupwara have advised the people living in Keran, Karnah, Machill, Budnamal, Jumgund, Nowgam, Kumkadi and those in the periphery of different nallahs and rivers prone to floods and sloppy areas to refrain from venturing in avalanche prone areas till the improvement of the weather.

Srinagar and its adjoining areas experienced intermittent light to moderate rains that waterlogged many low lying areas, disrupting normal life.

Srinagar received 9 mm, Qazigund 22.3 mm, Pahalgam 17.4 mm, Kupwara 4.5mm, Kokernag 2.8 mm, Gulmarg 19.4mm, Jammu 1.2mm, Banihal 4.2 mm, Katra 48 mm, Bhaderwah 1.8mm and Batote 19.3 mm during the past 24 hours till 8-30 AM on Sunday., the MeT office said.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of 19.3°C, Qazigund 18.9°C, Pahalgam 13.9°C, Kupwara 17.0°C, Kokernag 17.1°C, Gulmarg 11.0°C, Jammu 24.5°C, Banihal 17.6°C, Batote 18.0°C, Katra 21.2°C and Bhaderwah 18.7°C, the MeT office said.
