Srinagar: Police in Baramulla on Tuesday said that it has apprehended two individuals involved in extorting a family by demanding a sum of Rs 1 Lac to secure the release of a person detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
In a statement issued from Zonal Police Headquarters Srinagar Police said that on 3rd July Police Station Baramulla received a written complaint from a person namely Faisal Bashir Saleh S/o Bashir Ahmad Saleh R/o Kanlibagh Baramulla who alleged therein that two persons namely Mudasir Ahmad Wani S/o Manzoor Ahmad Wani R/o Sangri Baramulla and Yasir Rashid Rather S/o Ab Rashid Rather R/o Malpora Sheeri claiming to be affiliated with a political party approached their family to get his father Bashir Ahmad Saleh released from the custody, who was detained under PSA since 2022, and demanded Rs 1 Lac, adding therein that however, due to their poor financial condition, the family was unable to meet the monetary demand made by both accused persons.
Police in its statement further said that the father of the applicant got released after quash of PSA, and both the accused persons again approached them for the money, but the family denied to pay anything and told them that they couldn’t pay anything to them, adding therein that both the accused persons forced them to pay repeatedly and visited their home and even called on phone a number of times and warned that if they will not pay the amount, they will face serious repercussions and they will get his father re-detained. Stating that complainant somehow managed Rs 10 thousand and gave them just to keep his father unharmed, Police in it’s statement said that both the accused further gave him a deadline to pay entire amount of Rs.1 lacs, adding therein that a case vide FIR No. 134/2023 was registerd under relevant sections of law at Police Station Baramulla.
Police in it’s statement further said that upon receiving the complaint, Baramulla Police acted swiftly and investigated the matter following which both the accused identified as Mudasir Ahmad Wani and Yasir Rashid Rather were apprehended and subsequently arrested for their alleged involvement in extortion. Meanwhile, the SSP Baramulla Amod Ashok Nagpure in his message to the general public of Baramulla has advised them to contact him on mobile number 7051000999 in case any person demands bribe for any police related matter.
In the concluding para of it’s above quoted statement police reiterated it’s commitment to protect the rights of all citizens and urged people to remain vigilant and report any similar incidents to the nearest police station or Dial 112 to ensure prompt action against the culprits.
