Srinagar : Chairman municipal council Handwara was Thursday ousted after losing a no confidence motion filed by 7 of the total 13 councillors against him.
Handwara Municipal Council in north Kashmir’s Kupwara has a total of 13 councillors. The ousted chairman was holding the chair since the ULB elections were held in the region.
Sources said that the no confidence motion was filed by 7 councilors against the chairman.
They said that it was filed after consensus among the 7 councilors backed by the People’s Conference party.
Following the no-confidence motion, the floor test for the same was on Thursday held. “The floor test was conducted in presence of Tehsildar Handwara and Executive Officer Municipal Committee Handwara,” they said.
They said all the 7 councillors stood by their stance removing the chairman Masroor Banday.
“Masroor Banday lost the floor test. 7 councilors voted against him in the floor test among 13,” officials said.
Executive Officer Handwara Municipal Committee who was part of the floor test said that 7 councillors voted against the chairman.
“Of 13 a total of 7 were against the chairman. The dates about the new chairman shall be notified later by the district magistrate,” she said.
She said that until then the vice chairman Bashir Ahmad shall hold the chair of Chairman as in charge.
Meanwhile, Bashir while expressing happiness after the successful floor test said that all the 7 councillors will sit and decide the name of chairman.
“We are together. The floor test was held in presence of Executive office and observer Tehsildar Handwara,” he said
