Poppy cultivation destroyed in Bla and B’gam, One cultivator arrested in G’bal: Police

Srinagar: Police alongwith civil authorities in Baramulla and Budgam on Wednesday destroyed Poppy cultivation spread on vast area of land besides, police arrested a poppy cultivator in Ganderbal.
In a statement issued from Zonal Police Headquarters Srinagar Police said that in Baramulla, a specific information was received by police about illegal cultivation of Poppy (opium plant) at three different places viz Poshnag Kreeri, Dangerpora and Check Sari Pattan, adding therein that the police parties from Police Station Kreeri and Police Station Pattan led by respective SHOs alongwith Magistrates raided the spots falling in their jurisdiction and destroyed illegally cultivated Poppy spread on over 2.5 Kanals and at Dangerpora and Checksari Pattan, poppy spread on over 7 marlas of land was also destroyed.
Police in it’s statement also said that in Budgam also a joint team comprising of Police along with officials of excise and revenue department destroyed illegal poppy cultivation spread on over 2 kanals of land in Char-e-Sharief and Yarisathroo areas of Budgam.
Police in it’s statement further said that in a similar action, a poppy cultivator was arrested after receiving a specific information through reliable sources regarding Poppy Cultivation in the jurisdiction of PP Shadipora in Ganderbal. Stating that while acting swiftly, a police party led by In-charge PP Shadipora on the directions of SSP Ganderbal Nikhil Borkar reached the spot and arrested the accused person identified as Geelani Bhat S/o Ab Majid Bhat R/o Wakura, Ganderbal for cultivating Poppy/Opium plants in his fields at Zarigund Ganderbal and moreover green Poppy Bulbs (01 Quintal, 12 Kgs & 600 grams) was recovered and seized in presence of Executive Magistrate 1st Class Wakura.
Stating that police has accordingly registered cases under relevant sections of law at respective police stations and initiated further investigations into the case, Police in the concluding para of it’s above quoted statement appealed people to come forward with any information regarding cultivation of contrabands in their neighbourhood but warned that it will act strictly against the people getting involved in anti-social activities.
