Srinagar : The World Environmental Day was celebrated on 5th June 2023 with an objective to create awareness among the people about significance of environment in our lives.
According to Dr. Bilal Ahmad, Head, Division of Social Sciences, FoFy, SKUAST-K shared one day event was organized jointly by SKUAST-K (FOF & FoFy), SRDE, NCA, IDA, J&K Forest Department, Unique Educational Institute, Doroo Sopore Kashmir at Doodhpathri Budgam. While sharing the details of the program Dr Bilal Ahmad said speakers from different walks of life spoke on the occasion about the importance of environment, environmental issues and our role towards protection of environment. Dr. Bilal Ahmad in his speech discussed meaning of Verse of holy Quran, “Eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely He does not like the wasteful.” Surah Al-A’raf 7:31 While sharing the details of the program Dr Bilal Ahmad said that such seminars educate the people about importance of environment and our responsibility towards its protection. In the one day program more than 150 students, elders, social activists and official from various institutes/departments participated. Dr Shaikh Gulam Rasool in his address discussed in detail about the importance of environment and world environmental day 2023. Dr. S.N.Z. Geelani, (FOF, SKUAST-K), discussed in detail about the importance of Forests and our responsibility towards Conservation and protection of forests. This year, World Environment Day’s theme is “Beat the Plastic Pollution”. Plastic pollution is a global crisis that is threatening the health of our planet. Millions of tons of plastic waste each year end up in our oceans, rivers, and landfills, causing harm to wildlife, ecosystems, and ultimately, human health. This is a challenge that requires urgent action from individuals, governments, NGOs and businesses alike. If we fail to protect our environment, we will put the lives of humans, animals, plants and more at risk. Dr Shaikh Gh Rasool, further said, adding therein that the forest and trees filter the air and absorb harmful gases. Plants purify water, reduce the chances of flood maintain natural balance and many others
Dr Shaikh Gh Rasool during his address at the event thanked all participants and speakers of this program especially, Sarpanch of area Mr. Nazir Ahmad, scholars of SKUAST, students of Unique Educational Institute, Doroo Sopor Kashmir, Lubna, Molvi Maqbool, Adil Ahmad, local people who provided their full support for the success of this program. During discussion with experts from different fields, Dr Bilal Ahmad organizer of program said that environment gives people innumerable benefits that we can’t repay our entire life, adding therein that in Islam, planting a tree is a sadaqah jariyah (continued charity), for the poor and the rich alike. “Whenever a human being or even an animal shelters under the shade of a tree or relishes a fruit that it produces, the planter will earn rewards, even after his or her death’ Said Dr Bilal, adding that “ It is our religious duty to protect environment”. He concluded with the words: Earth is like our home and we must make efforts to keep it clean and green. On the occasion of World Environment Day, let us promise to make it a better place to live!
