GDC Surankote celebrates Int’l Biodiversity Day-2023

Students participate in series of environment conservation activities

Poonch: Department of Biosciences, Government Degree College Surankote, in collaboration with Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) on Monday celebrated ‘International Biodiversity Day’ 2023. The theme for International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 is “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity.”
The College Principal Prof (Dr) Rani Mughal kick-started the event by flagging off the students of the college on a field trip to the Botanical Garden of the Higher Education Department at Shidehara, Poonch.
An open painting competition, under the banner of IIC (self-driven activity of calendar for the 3rd quarter of 2022-23), was also held at the venue with a theme of “Innovative solutions for conserving Biodiversity”. The main aim is to raise awareness among students about the importance of biodiversity conservation.
Dr. Rani Mughal, in her short speech, highlighted the importance of conservation of biodiversity and the role of the students in conserving the biodiversity. Dr. Mughal in her speech emphasized that students must proactively participate in such programmes. She motivated the students to act as ambassadors to spread the message of biodiversity conservation to all. She appreciated the Department of Biosciences and Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) of the college for organizing this programme.
On this occasion, Head of the Department of Geography and Convener IIC, Dr. Mohammad Ashfaq highlighted role of Biodiversity and also emphasized the need for preservation of the native biodiversity of the Pir Panchal Region. Dr. Mohammad Ashfaq also highlighted the importance of new and innovative solutions in preserving the Biodiversity.
Head of the Department of Botany Dr. Syed Basharat highlighted the purpose of celebrating the World Biodiversity Day. He highlighted the significance of Biodiversity, its value, threats and various measures to conserve biodiversity. The faculty members that accompanied the students to the venue include Dr. Khalil Reshi (HoD Urdu), Prof. Waseem-ul Haq (HoD Physics) and Dr. Mushraf Qureshi (lecturer Botany). Besides that Dr. Syed Ovais (HoD Chemistry), Prof. Kaleeq Qazi(HoD Sociology) and Dr. Sarfaraz Mir (HoD History) were present in the flagging off ceremony.
