Selectivity In Removal Of Overhead Cables In Srinagar

Though removal of overhead cables and dangling wires started by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) weeks ago is a very good move for clearing the mess from electric poles but doing it selectively from main roads and not inner lanes leading to residential colonies goes against the safety of the hapless populations in residential colonies across Srinagar. Though the removal of overhead cables and dangling wires from the main roads in the first instance will make markets on both sides of the main roads attractive for both the locals and as well as the tourists but dangers caused by the overhead cables and dangling wires are more intense in the residential colonies than on the main roads the two extreme sides of which are mostly occupied by shops and business outlets . What matters the most is the fact that safety concerns of both the traders running their business outlets on both sides of main roads and as well as the residents in the housing colonies deserve equal attention and intervention of the authorities of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).  Keeping unresolved the safety issues related to removal of overhead cables and dangling wires of either the markets situated on both sides of the main roads or the inner lanes leading to residential colonies is not advisable by standards of administrative understandabilities as such actions not only show inequality bu also fuel sense of discrimination among the people . Another issue of concern is intense disturbance caused by removing of overhead cables and dangling wires in the markets situated on the main roads.

“Since the dangling wires and cables pose a more dangerous threat to the people in the residential colonies during nights than on the main roads in the day time it would have been better for the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to start removing overhead cables and dangling wires from electric poles in residential colonies before carrying out the work on main roads in and around markets”.

When the cables and wires seen in a criss cross situation on electric poles are swinging ten times day in and day out minute and after minute, people are seen moving to distant places for safety .Removing overhead cables and dangling wires simultaneously from both the sides of main roads in busy market is causing huge convenience to people during day time and better for the authorities of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to remove overhead cables and dangling wires in and around markets in phases only.  Since the dangling wires and cables pose a more dangerous threat to the people in the residential colonies during nights than on the main roads in the day time it would have been better for the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to start removing overhead cables and dangling wires from electric poles in residential colonies before carrying out the work on main roads in and around markets.
