Handwara: An open garbage dumping site, with filth lying in plain sight here in Tawheedabad Guloora village of Handwara in Northern Kupwara district has become an eyesore for the general public and a health hazard for the people who live and work in the vicinity.

The garbage according to the locals is there for at least 2 years and the dumping site – made by the nearby villagers is close to apple orchards, some residential structures and a Masjid.

Locals while talking to the correspondent said that garbage dumped openly at government land by the villagers and passersby has become a nuisance for them and is causing immense hardships to them.

They said, that the site has been a source of embarrassment for them apart from the health hazard, as the face of this Tawheedabad Guloora village of Langate is presenting an awkward look which is taking a hit on the marital adjustments.

“We have been trying to get the attention of the authorities towards this menace, but to no avail,” residents added.

“Dogs are always seen at the spot as they keep searching for food, posing a threat to locals particularly children’s. Just a few days ago, a kid was bitten by the dog at the site”, said Wali Mohammed, a local mohalla head.

“The site is close to the residential area as well as Masjid and locals are bearing the brunt with frequent health issues”, said Abdul Majeed, a local. “The foul smell emanating from the dump reaches the houses and is a constant nuisance for them”, Majeed added.

People from the other nearby areas are carrying garbage in their vehicles during night hours and left it at an open space here, upon raising concern often lead to confrontation, residents said.

They however, urged the concerned authorities to look into the matter so that they could have a sigh of relief.

“Since you brought the matter into my notice, I will surely take action in this regard,” said Tehsildar concerned.
