Shopian: The first ever Snow Sports Festival was on Friday organized by J&K Sports Council in collaboration with District Administration Shopian at Sports Stadium Batapora, here.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Sachin Kumar Vaishya who was chief guest on the occasion inaugurated the first ever one-day Snow Sports festival. Senior Superintendent Police, Shopian, Tanushree was the guest of honour on the occasion.
CPO Khursheed Ahmad, Divisional Sports Officer, NuzhatAara, other officers and officials were also present on the occasion along with sports enthusiasts and players.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC highlighted the significance of the Winter Sports festival and said that it will give a boost to the sports and tourism activities in the district.
Referring particularly to the sports activities conducted when fields in the district are under the blanket of snow, the DC said that this Fest has added spark to the drab settings witnessed mostly in playfields during winter.
SSP Shopian said that J&K Sports Council has played a vital role, especially during the past couple of years in extending the reach to far-off places of the J&K.
The festival drew crowds from across the district and witnessed the participation of more than 300 athletes including a good number of females. The players participated in Snow Cricket, Snow Volleyball, Snow Shoe, Roll Ball and Ice stock events.
The players were all praise for the organisers for organising the unique winter sports competition in the district and said it will motivate more and more students towards sports.
