Awareness Progon MWPSC Act 2007 organised at Bla

Baramulla :  A one-day Legal Awareness programme on Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 (MWPSC Act 2007) for Police functionaries to promote “Inter-Generational Bonding and Ageing with Dignity” was on Thursday held at District Bar Association Baramulla.

The programme was organized by National Institute of Social Defense, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India and Anugraha Regional Resource Training Center on Ageing in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Baramulla.

The programme was conducted under the chairmanship of Mohammad Yousuf Wani, Chairman DLSA Baramulla and under the supervision of Muzamil Ahmad Wani, Secretary DLSA Baramulla.

On the occasion, Speakers said that the key objective of this program is to create awareness and sensitivity about various issues of senior citizens.

They said that senior citizens are increasingly facing a variety of hardships in day to day life with respect to their basic life requirements including food, shelter, clothes, health problems, financial problems etc.

The programme was divided into four sessions. In the first session Adv. Ashfaq Hussain Wani acted as resource person and delivered a lecture on Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens.

In the second session, a representative from Social Welfare Department Bushra Bedar, Central Administrator, One Stop Centre Baramulla, acted as a resource person and laid emphasis on different schemes of the Social Welfare Department regarding welfare of senior citizens.

She also narrated a sad experience regarding abandonment of senior citizens by their children and thus advised the audience to stand firmly against such menace.

In the third session, Advocate Syed Sibtain Geelani, acted as a resource person and delivered a lecture about salient features of the said Act. He also enlightened the audience about the current deteriorating situations of the senior citizens in the society. Besides, he advised the police officials to help the senior citizens in their respective areas within the mandate of the said Act.

In the fourth session, Advocate Zahoor Ahmad Mir acted as a resource person and delivered a lecture on the overall importance of the Act and advised the audience especially Police Officials to look keenly into their respective areas where parents and senior citizens are left destitute and abandoned by their children/relatives.

He also laid emphasis on the key objective of the program to create awareness and sensitivity about various issues of senior citizens.

The programme was attended by several Police officials nominated by Senior Superintendent of Police Baramulla, some of the PLVs of Baramulla and Staff members of DLSA Baramulla.
