69th Cooperatives week celebration  commences in Rajouri

 Cooperatives can play an important role in doubling farmers' income: DC

Rajouri :  As part of the week-long celebrations of the 69th All India Cooperative Week, a grand district-level function was Tuesday presided over by Deputy Commissioner VikasKundal.

The function was organised by the Department of Cooperative District Rajouri, as a part of nationwide celebrations of the week.

During the event many speakers spoke at length on the history of the cooperative movement and its contribution towards the socio-economic development of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Secretary NCCT, LD Ahuja, while interacting with the members of the cooperative societies, said that with the creation of the ministry of cooperatives special focus is being laid on the development of cooperatives. He also said that soon a cooperative university is going to be opened.

Gen. Secretary Cooperatives Union, GD Bakshi, while speaking at the event, said that it is high time to engage the unemployed youth in the cooperative societies so that they can earn on their own and live a dignified life in the society.

He also underlined the need to make the best possible use of the available resources for the socio-economic development of the region.

Addressing the event, the DC said that the objective of the celebrations was to highlight the achievements of the cooperative sector, create awareness about how to uplift the weaker sections of society, share success stories, and lay out the future strategy for strengthening the cooperative movement.

He highlighted a number of measures being taken by the district administration to strengthen the cooperative societies. “Dedicated efforts are being made to strengthen the cooperative societies and provide all possible help in promoting the cooperative movement,” he added.

Underlining the need to make the best possible use of the available resources for the socio-economic development of the region, he said that cooperative societies can play an important role in self-employment generation activities and boosting the economy of the district.

The DC also said that the District Administration is focusing on doubling farmers’ income through cooperatives, and marketing of local produce is being done through cooperative societies.

He also urged the members to work religiously to make the cooperative movement a grand success, while urging   the officers of the Cooperative Department and its members to work with dedication and in tandem to achieve desired goals.

Earlier, the Deputy Registrar, Cooperative Societies in his address, highlighted the achievements of the cooperative societies and informed the gathering that in District Rajouri, 122 cooperative societies were registered under the J&K Cooperative Societies Act, 1989, while 57 cooperative societies have been registered under the cooperative societies act, 1999.

He said the cooperative institutions in the district are operational in diverse economic activities like dairy, poultry, consumer stores, fertilizer, steel, cement, and food procurement. It was also apprised that the total business turnover of Cooperative bodies was recorded at Rs 13.16 crore up to September 30, 2022. As many as six cooperative societies have been revived as of now, he added.
