GDC Udhampur organises workshop on ‘Patent filing, Presentation of Innovative ideas’

Udhampur : Government Degree College Udhampur, in collaboration with J&K Science, Technology and Innovation Council, Department of Science and Technology Udhampur, on Wednesday organized a one-day workshop on “Introduction to the patent filing and presentation of new innovative ideas”.

The event was organised under the overall patronage of the College Principal Prof (Dr) Ramesh Kumar Gupta and Guidance of Dr. ManishaSaroopKohli (Incharge for the Day). The workshop was sponsored by JKSTIC, Department of Science and Technology (DST) and coordinated by ShrutiKhanna, District Coordinator DST, Udhampur. Prof. SeemaKotwal was the Convener and Dr. JasmeetKour was the coordinator.

Speaking on the occasion, the College Principal  congratulated the organising team for hosting the event with great acumen and stressed upon the need of understanding both IPR and patenting. He welcomed the innovative ideas of the students and said that India will lead in future with these innovative minds.

Dr. ManishaSaroopKohli appreciated the unique programme initiated by Department Of Biotechnology under College Science Club in collaboration with JKSTIC, Department of Science and Technology, Udhampur, to search and train young minds for Innovations and Patenting, as this is and will carve the future of India. The programme consisted of the inaugural, technical and valedictory sessions. The inaugural session started with the lighting of the traditional lamp by all the dignitaries.

Thereafter the speakers, jury members and the audience were formally welcomed by Coordinator Dr. JasmeetKour. She apprised about the nature of the programme and threw light on the proceedings of the events. Dr Shelly Sehgal, Assistant Professor, Centre for Molecular Biology Lab, Central University of Jammu, and DrYashpalKhajuria, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, University of Jammu were the resource persons.

Dr. Shelly Sehgal presented an interactive deliberation on “The What, Why and How of the Intellectual Property Rights”. She enlightened the participants about different types of IPRs like patents, trademarks, copyrights etc and also apprised them about the need for IPR protection and application filling process.

Dr. YashpalKhajuria spoke on “Role of Intellectual property rights in stimulating innovations and other side of story”. He talked about IPRs and their role in start-ups. He said that start-ups can protect their innovations by patenting. In biological systems only microorganisms are patentable. Other types of IPR protection systems were also discussed.

Dr. K. C Sharma, senior surgeon and Innovator and DrVikramGulati, Principal, Shivalik College of Education and Innovator Educationist were the observers as well as the jury members for the Best Innovative ideas competition. The participant students presented their innovative ideas in front of the jury members.The best ideas were selected.

This was followed by the valedictory session which began with the prize distribution. The jury members and the dignitaries presented cash prizes sponsored by DST to the students with the best innovative ideas. The first, second and the third positions for Innovative ideas were clinched by ShivanshBhogal, Ashwani Singh and Preeti Devi. Consolation prizes were adjudged and awarded to Baljeet Singh, Manoj Kumar and UdharitaMahajan.AllThe participants for the competition were given certificates. In the felicitation ceremony all the dignitaries were presented with a token of gratitude.

In the workshop Dr. Sunil Kumar Bhat, Prof. Satish Kumar, Prof. Kamal Kishore, Dr. AnkushBharti, Prof. Rakesh Singh, Prof. RajanBharti, Dr. Devi Das, and Dr. Richa Sharma played a vital role in its organisation. The programme was attended by a number of other staff members and more than hundred students. DrJasmeetKour coordinated the proceedings of the inaugural, technical and valedictory session. Dr. Asha Sohil presented the formal vote of thanks.
