Srinagar : Twenty student volunteers from Kashmir University and various degree colleges affiliated with the varsity’s office of National Service Scheme returned from an adventure camp held in Himachal Pradesh here on Monday.
According to a statement issued from Centre for Public Relations, University of Kashmir here, the 10-daycamp was held at AtalBihari Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali, for NSS volunteers from J&K, Haryana, New Delhi and Rajasthan.
The contingent of 20 volunteers comprising 10 boys and 10 girls were selected on the basis of physical fitness, interest in sports and camping experience.
The camp aimed to expose the participants to mountaineering and trekking techniques, camping techniques, erection of tents during camps, mountain hazards, rope-using, knot-making techniques, artificial wall climbing, real rock climbing, rappelling down rocks and river crossing etc.
The group was led by NSS program officers Dr Mohammad Amin from Islamia College and MsBilquis from Women’s College, M A Road.
Speaking about camp, DrMusavir Ahmed, Programme Coordinator NSS KU congratulated the contingent for successfully completing the important camp and maintaining high decorum and discipline.
He said that NSS has become very popular among student community in Kashmir and under the directions of Vice-Chancellor Prof Nilofer Khan, more higher secondary schools and colleges are being provided NSS units to offer a structured platform to students for community service.
In a concluding para of the KU Statement, the NSS has its roots in Gandhian philosophy of community service and offers opportunities to youth to understand their communities, work with underprivileged groups, raise awareness on vital national and local issues, he said.
