Shortage of vital drugs at J&K’s retail drug outlets

Healthcare is not only all about diagnostic tests, formal treatment and surgeries at the hospitals and nursing homes but it is also about the quality of medicines available at the retail drug outlets and as well as hassle free availability of medicines at retail drug outs in twin capital cities Srinagar and Jammu, major towns and even remotest of the remote areas in both Kashmir Valley and as well as Jammu division. Amid rising doubts over quality of medicines purchased at retail drug outlets in Jammu & Kashmir the shortage of drugs prescribed by doctors for most of the vital diseases spreading fast in Valley are neither noticed well nor addressed by the drug control department in either Kashmir valley or Jammu division. Some leading retail drug outlets even in Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir valley mostly district and sub district headquarters are found denying customers the medicines prescribed for most common diseases like diabetes, hypertension, prostrate etc., etc. The causes for non availability of a particular medicine for one particular disease very frequently prescribed by doctors are neither noticed well nor probed for the purposes of public conveniences by the drug control department in either Kashmir Valley or Jammu division. Unfortunately the medicines prescribed at private hospitals and private nursing homes in Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir valley mostly district and sub district headquarters are found available only at the retail drug outlets established inside the premises of such private hospitals and nursing homes and nowhere else outside the premises of such private hospitals and nursing homes. This bad trend witnessed at private hospitals and nursing homes in Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir valley mostly district and sub district headquarters obviously confirms the allegations of exploitation of patients against such private hospitals and nursing homes in Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir Valley.

Keeping in view a disturbing health scenario in the aftermath of high intensity pandemic periods it is imperative for the drug control department to launch a major crackdown on retails drug outlets in an attempt to further the causes of the availability of all medicines frequently prescribed by doctors for some vital diseases by doctors across Jammu & Kashmir.

The drug control department could have on it’s own even without receiving any complaint from the patients initiated a mass inspection drive against such private hospitals and nursing homes for the purposes of prompt action for any kind of exploitation of patients at such private hospitals and nursing homes.
