Teachers have a central role in developing education system in any state or union territory of the country and same holds good for the teachers of Jammu & Kashmir working in Government and Private Schools. Though teachers get best teachers awards in recognition of their performance but when the results of the Government schools are poor enough to evoke criticism and condemnation from people within and outside the government, even the people in the government don’t show any hesitation in condemning even the recipients of best teacher awards. So the teachers of Government schools despite having won best teacher awards face criticism and condemnation from people within and outside the government the time when they fail to improve the results of their schools in annual examinations. True it is that teachers of schools showing better results in the annual examinations deserve best teacher awards but it is also a fact that such teachers have a moral, institutional and social responsibility to train their colleagues who fail to show improvements in results of their schools in the annual examinations year after year. Getting an award for performance and winning accolades from the society for wining best teacher award on teacher’s day does not end the journey of a teacher in the teaching profession but hereafter a teachers mission is to carry forward the mission of excellence in teaching to it’s logical conclusion. What teachers learn from the experiences of their award winning colleagues should be made part of class room teaching-learning processes with the spirits and purposes of improving the results in the annual examinations as such a practice will always attract appreciations from both the government and as well as the civil society groups.

Administrative wisdom demands that performance of the students in the annual examinations should also be made one of the important yardsticks in selection of teachers for best teacher awards as such a practice could hopefully improve the performance of government schools in board examination. The practices and procedures for best teacher awards as such can be changed to bring in more transparency in the selection of teachers for best teacher awards as ultimately the performance of the students in examinations is one of the important factors in deciding the best teacher awards announced on September 5 annually.

Since raising the standards of performance of the students is the spirit of teaching, the educationists reserve the right to say that the performance of a teacher can be measured by the performance of their students in the examination.
