Unholy disposal of sacrificial waste: Consciousness matters

Though scientific disposal of the hides of animals slaughtered to perform “Qurbani” on the eve of Eid Ul Adha is as important as is choosing quality animals for this scared purpose but unfortunately heaps of animal hides and chopped heads of sacrificial lambs were seen scattered on the banks of river Jehlum and other water bodies across the Srinagar city. Even a video showing a dog running with a chopped head of a goat in his mouth in a commercial hub of Srinagar city went viral on social media sites. Such highly condemnable acts attracting huge condemnation on social media sites fortunately sent out a message that social and human consciousness still runs deep in every nook and corner of Kashmir Valley.  What merits a mention here is the fact that though load carriers were sent to households by Srinagar Muncipal Corporation (SMC) for collecting the offals and waste including hides and chopped heads of slaughtered animals on all the three consecutive days scheduled for “Qurbani” but people   in some residential areas of Srinagar city instead of availing the facility of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) had ironically thrown offals and hides of slaughtered animals on road sides and banks of water bodies including river Jehlum in some parts of Srinagar city. Such a bad practice does not go only against the sanctity and spirit of “Qurbani” but it also pollutes the environment besides becoming a cause for spread of some communicable diseases in the populated areas of cities, towns and villages.

A public awareness campaign by both the religious leaders particularly Imams and the municipal bodies of cities and towns against the unholy disposal of the sacrificial waste at public places at least a month before the commencement of Eid Ul Adha could be a way out from now onwards. Never forget that unholy disposal of the sacrificial waste on the eve of Eid Ul Adha goes against the very basic spirits and sanctity of ‘Qurbani’and also pollutes the environment besides becoming a cause for spread of some communicable diseases.

Ironically this bad practice condemnable both islamically and as well as ethically and environmentally went more rampant in Srinagar city and if not countered by both the religious leaders particularly Imams of Mosques and as well as the municipal authorities from now onwards will bring a bad name to the society both within and outside Kashmir valley.  Human wisdom demands that both the municipal bodies and people ensure scientific disposal of waste and offals’ including stomach, intestines, gastro intestinal content, hooves, skins and hides, horns and massive bones after the sacrifice of the animals on the eve of Eid Ul Adha hereafter. A public awareness campaign by both the religious leaders particularly Imams and the municipal bodies of cities and towns against the unholy disposal of the sacrificial waste at public places at least a month before the commencement of Eid Ul Adha could be a way out from now onwards.
