DC Srinagar reviews progress of Mission Amrit Sarovar to rejuvenate water bodies

Srinagar : In order to review progress in the implementation of Mission Amrit Sarovar, aimed at developing and rejuvenating water bodies as a part of the celebration of ‘Azadika Amrit Mahotsav’ to be completed by August 15, 2023, the District Level Committee(DLC) met under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad here at Conference Hall of the DC Office Complex.
Besides, Additional District Development Commissioner, Srinagar Zahoor Ahmad Mir, the meeting was attended by Superintending Engineer, Hydraulic Circle Srinagar, Assistant Commissioner Development, District Soil Conservation Officer, Executive Engineer I&FC and other concerned Officers.
On the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner reviewed the progress made so far in implementation of Mission Amrit Sarovar by the concerned Departments in the District in identifying springs/ponds for their development and rejuvenation as envisaged under the Mission.
The DC was apprised that about 75 springs/ponds have been identified so far by RDD, I&FC, SMC, Soil Conservation and Forest Departments in the District and process of exploring more sites is going on to achieve cent percent target.
The DC asked the officers of the concerned Departments to finalize the action plan of all remaining identified springs by July 05 so that execution of work is taken up for their rejuvenation and preservation.
Underscoring the importance of conservation and protection of water resources, the DC said Water is one of the most important natural resources and is an invaluable gift from nature to the entire human race. He said Two-third of the earth is covered with water, but only two to three percent of available water is usable and many countries of the world are facing acute water crisis.
He said realizing the same problem, the Prime Minister has launched the initiative on the eve of National Panchayat Day on 24th April 2022. He said Amrit Sarovars will play an important role in increasing the availability of water both on surface and under-ground.
