Srinagar:Experts during a workshop at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Wednesday said that there is a need to promote green technologies for a sustainable environment on earth and urged all stakeholders to join hands in this noble mission.
The workshop titled ‘ Recent Trends in Sustainable and Green Technology (RTSGT – 2022) is being organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering in collaboration with IIChE Student Chapter NIT Srinagar.
The inaugural event was presided over by Director NIT, Prof. (Dr.) RakeshSehgal and Prof. G.D. Yadav, Padma Shri Awardee, ICT Mumbai was Chief Guest on the occasion.
Dr.Mustaq A. Rather and Dr.Shashikant are conveners of the workshop while Dr.TanveerRasool, Dr. Malik Parvez, and Dr.LeelaManoharAeshalawas are coordinators of the program.
Addressing the gathering, Prof.Yadav said there is a need to promote green technologies for a healthy and sustainable environment so that visible change can be seen on the ground.
“Green technology comes in the form of recycling, renewable resources, health and safety concerns, energy efficiency, and more. There is a need to tackle the environmental concerns and promote green technology,” he said.
Prof.Yadav said the main objective of green technology is to use science and technology to protect natural resources and mitigate the negative environmental impact of human activity.
In his message, Director NIT, Prof.RakeshSehgal said green technology offers the best hope to counteract the effects of climate change and pollution. It also takes into account the long- and short-term impact something has on the environment, he said.
“Sustainable development is the core of environmental technologies. Green technology can help us achieve the sustainability goals and we believe everyone should be more interested in developing it and using it for their business operations,” Prof.Sehgal said.
On the occasion, in charge-Director Prof. M.F. Wani, Dean (R&C) NIT Srinagar said such research and technology are the need of the hour.
He congratulated the Head of Chemical Engineering for initiating such programs in the department. The role of Science and Technology is pivotal for the evolution of mankind, Prof. Wani said.
Institute’s Registrar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari pitched for the need to adopt green and clean technologies to achieve the objective of Millennium Development goals. It aims to reduce the impact of construction on the environment considering human health and safety of the planet Earth, he said.
“Today we truly need technologies, which run on green technology systems. We need to explore more areas in this field to save the environment from being polluted anymore,” Prof. Bukhari said.
Prof. C. Kartikeyan, Vice President (Guest of honour) said that green technology is crucial to preserve the environment. Currently, there is an urgent need to form a long-term sustainable investment mechanism for screening, evaluation, and promotion of appropriate green technology, he said.
Prof. G.A. Harmain, (Special Invitee) NIT Srinagar stated that there should be special emphasis to make people aware about how individual actions can have an impact.
“Green technology aims to replace materials, processes, or products that harm the environment with solutions that do not disrupt or deplete natural resources,” he said.
In his welcome address, Dr. M.N.S. Khan, HOD, Chemical Engineering said the workshop is designed for students and faculty of engineering or technical institution and personnel from industry.
“Distinguished experts from Industry and Academic Institutes will interact and share their experiences with the participants during the program. Our department will act as a platform for providing relevant knowledge to participants, “he said.
Earlier Dr.Mustaq A. Rather, Convener of the program presented a detailed report of the 5-day program. He said delegates from across the country are participating in workshops representing top most institutes and universities.
“Eminent speakers will be delivering the lectures during the training program to impart participants with the basic knowledge and skills regarding the latest technologies,” he said.
A formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Malik Parvez, Coordinator of the 5-day workshop. He expressed his gratitude to Director NIT Prof.RakeshSehgal, Registrar NIT Srinagar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari, and resource persons for sharing their experiences with the participants.
