Plans of making Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, a smart city may genuinely take years but estimates of drains in the newly built residential colonies are not taken up even for allotment and execution on priority by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) headed by a foreign educated Mayor and direct recruit IAS Officers from Jammu & Kashmir. Administrative wisdom demands that better for Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and municipal bodies of major towns of Kashmir Valley to work on building smart drains before working on a smart city project for Srinagar and smart town project for major towns of Kashmir valley. While heavy rains trigger flood threats not only due to rise of water level above the danger marks in river Jehlum but also due to defunct drainage systems both in Srinagar and as well as in other major towns of Kashmir valley, the urban planners and administrators overseeing the working of drainage systems in Srinagar city and major towns of Kashmir valley owe an explanation to the people for their failures in allotments for new drainage plans and their execution in  new residential colonies and upgradation of old drainage systems for the purposes of their proper functioning. While clogged drainage system is also the major cause of pollution and severe flood threats during the rainy seasons, the drainage woes are central to all civic woes in both Srinagar City and as well as major towns of Kashmir Valley . It has been experienced after 2014 devastating floods that if the drainage maintenance is not proper, ground water gets contaminated which can even lead to the spread of infectious diseases. Never forget that contaminated water is one of the primary reasons for many of the water-borne diseases. So the use of multipurpose drainage system deserves immediate intervention of Srinagar Municipal Corporation in Srinagar and municipal bodies in major towns of Kashmir valley. With the technological interventions sensors are placed inside the manhole as they monitor the flow levels of drainage, detect the elevated flow levels and clogging, if any, and transfer the appropriate information to the sensors placed next to the manholes using the communication module.

What matters the most is the attention and intervention of drainage and sewerage wings of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and municipal bodies of major towns of Kashmir valley who are yet to understand the fact that without a drain no roads can be built in new residential area as roads can be built only over underground drains. So unprecedented delays in the follow up on the estimates for repairs of old drainage systems and construction of new drainage systems for new residential areas  are the cause of a increasing civic mess both in Srinagar city and as well as major towns of Kashmir valley. _____________________________________________________________

A wireless sensor network that has the capacity to communicate among them is used to send and receive the data. The proposed system continuously monitors the water levels at the drainage system and will raise an alert indicating the need for cleaning the drainage. This prevents the formation of clogging in the drainage and help to keep the city clean and safe. So this is what a smart drainage system means for any smart city or smart town and same holds good for a smart city project  in Srinagar and smart town project for major town of Kashmir valley. So unprecedented delays in the follow up on the estimates for repairs of old drainage systems and construction of new drainage systems for new residential areas  are the cause of a increasing civic mess both in Srinagar city and as well as major towns of Kashmir valley .
