Srinagar: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Basaant Kumar Rath on Sunday submitted his resignation to the Jammu and Kashmir Governor to join the electoral politics.
Rath, holding the rank of an Inspector General of Police (IGP), addressed the letter to the Union Territory Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Commandant General HG/CD and SDRF. He also uploaded the resignation letter on his Twitter handle.
Rath said in the letter, “I wish to resign from the Indian Police Service, in order to be able to participate in electoral politics. Please consider this letter as my request for resignation/voluntary retirement and process it accordingly… I’ll be grateful.”
Rath had remained in controversy for his alleged conduct and was put under suspension around two years ago. He served in Kashmir as a top traffic police cop and people in general were very impressed by his style of work.
During his tenure, traffic management became smooth on Srinagar roads. He also gained popularity among the Kashmiris during his stint as IGP traffic.
