Srinagar: Security forces conducted a massive search operation at Shirmal in Shopian district where a brief gun battle raged on Saturday evening.
The encounter started at Shirmal, Shopian during an anti militancy operation yesterday launched by joint forces following an input about militant presence.
However, there was a lull during the night and no contact was established with the militants today, sources said.
Police and security forces launched a massive search operation in the area and the operation was on till the last reports came in.
However, it is believed that the militants may have escaped during the initial exchange of fire.
This month security forces have stepped up anti militant operations in Kashmir and in June, 29 militants have been shot dead.
