CUK celebrates 8th Int’l Yoga Day

G’bal: The Department of Physical Education, School of Education in collaboration with the Department of Students Welfare (DSW), Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Tuesday celebrated the 8th International Yoga Day on the theme “Yoga For Humanity,” at varsity’s Green Campus here during early morning. Since its inception in the year 2015, June 21st is celebrated every year as the International Day of Yoga all across the world.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Shah highlighted the importance of yoga in tackling the challenges of physical and mental health. He said, Yoga is a form of Physical activity that helps us to attain physical and mental well-being. Prof. Farooq Shah assured that the university in future will be at the forefront to endorse any such opportunity that develops the physical and mental capability of an individual as well as of the society.
Registrar Prof. M Afzal Zargar, explained the role of yoga in increasing the body flexibility and controlling a number of diseases such as obesity, hypertension, depression, diabetes, arthritis, lower back problems etc. Addressing the participants, he emphasized that our primary focus should always be on the health of the individual which in turn determines the health of the nation. He said the varsity will continue to organise such programmes so that people can understand the significance of Yoga and other sports for maintaining good health.
Addressing the gathering, Finance Officer, Prof. Fayaz Ahmad Nikka said, yoga reduces stress and anxiety, boosts energy and improves respiratory functions. “By practicing yoga, other physical activities and taking the right kind of diet, the immunity of people can be maintained to a very high level,” he said.
During the celebration, which was also attended by Controller of Examination, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir, Dean School of Education, Prof. Zahoor Ahmad Geelani, Dean Students Welfare, Dr. Mehraj ud Din Shah, Deputy DSW, Dr. Asif Khan, faculty members, administrative staff and students from different departments of the university, different yoga Asanas and Pranayama were performed in sync with the Yoga performed by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, which was beamed live from Mysuru Palace.
The event also concluded the three-week workshop on yoga which was kickstarted on 1st of June 2022. During the workshop, different yoga-related activities like an expert lecture by Prof. Usha Sujit Nair (Dean Academics, National Sports University Imphal), an inter-declamation competition on yoga and yoga exercise sessions for students, teaching/non-teaching faculty for all four campuses (Green campus, Nunnar campus, Arts campus & Tullamulla Campus) were conducted.
